CHENNAI: Madras High Court has directed public sector insurance giant LIC to keep vacant three per cent of the posts in the current recruitment for Apprentice Development Officers for persons with disabilities.
Apart from this interim order, Justice D Hariparanthaman passed a further direction to the LIC to issue a separate advertisement calling for applications to fill the three per cent posts from persons with disabilities as provided under the provisions of Persons with Disabilities Equal Opportunities, Protection of Rights and Full Participation) Act.
The Judge passed the orders on a petition by M Murugesan, a 32-year-old physically-challenged person from Vaniyambadi, Vellore, who has been an LIC agent for over 10 years.
On June 1, the LIC issued an advertisement calling for applications for the post of Apprentice Development Officers in south zone. There were 410 vacancies for general category, 146 for OBC, 95 for SC and three for SC.
The petitioner contended that out of the 664 vacancies, three per cent ought to have been reserved for differently abled persons as per the provisions of Persons with Disabilities Act. But the notification issued by LIC failed to mention anything about the reservation.
“In the absence of the reservation for differently abled, I am deprived of my statutory right guaranteed under provisions of Persons with Disabilities Act,” Murugesan said.
He sought for an interim injunction from filling up the three per cent posts, besides seeking to quash the notification.
