KOCHI: Group of Technology Companies (GTech), an industry body of IT/ITeS companies in Kerala, has come forward to support the Cricket Association for the Blind in Kerala (CABK).
A cheque for Rs 2 lakh was handed over to the office bearers of CABK at a function held in Infopark on Wednesday. Indian team is the reigning world champions of blind cricket in 20-20 and one-day formats, with three Kerala players on the squad. Blind cricket is yet to be recognized by either the International Cricket Council (ICC) nor Board of Cricket Control in India (BCCI).
The funds were raised through a mega carnival organized in Thiruvananthapuram as part of GTech’s Corporate Social Responsibility(CSR). Another Ten Lakh rupees raised through the event will go in support of a special school in Thiruvananthapuram for children affected by Dyslexia.
“ Cricket, for us is an opportunity to showcase to the world, that there is no limit to what we can do. The support from GTech comes at a crucial phase and would go a long way in sustaining our activities. This is an opportunity for us to also try and create an even avenue to bring in more and more blind people to the great opportunity the game provides and thereby empower them,” said Rajanesh Henry, general secretary of CABK.
“ The IT industry has always been supportive of the differently-abled. We see this as yet another way of empowering the visually challenged. We believe that the popularity of cricket will draw the attention of the society to the need to support the cause of differently abled,” said Vijay Kumar P, convenor of GTech People Focus Group.
CABK is playing host to the first-ever Asian Trophy Cricket Tournament for the Blind. The tournament is being planned to be conducted in January, 2016 at the Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium, Kochi. Apart from the host India, teams from Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka will participate.
Hrishikesh Nair, chief executive officer of Infopark, Joseph Korah, vice-chairman of GTech and centre head- Cognizant Technology Services were also present.
