Naga Blind Association (NBA) observed the International Day of Persons with Disabilities on December 3 in Dimapur. The day, which was declared by the United Nations, aims to promote an understanding of disability issues while mobilising support. ‘Inclusion matters: Access and empowerment of people of all disabilities’ is the year’s theme.
The NBA observed the special day at the School for the Visually Impaired, which is located at Notun Basti, Dimapur.
Dr.Hemendranath Dutta, Vice Chancellor, Global Open University, Nagaland, who graced the occasion as the chief guest expressed his admiration for the students of the school, who he said possess exceptional talents. According to him, the students though visually impaired are capable people, whose inherent talent must be nurtured ultimately empowering them to become torch bearers of the society.
Citing examples of visually impaired people, who have defied societal barriers to succeed in life, Dr. Dutta said, “They are mentally capable, we only need to show them the path.”
“They maybe visually impaired but they have the power of mental vision. It is through our mind that we think, we conceive and do our work.”
Stating that they have the same dignity and rights as anyone else, he challenged them to free themselves from the feeling of being weak by developing “inner faculty” and pursuing their goals.
“There are mentally capable, we only need to show them the path,” he said, adding that they should be empowered to become torch bearers of the society.
