TOWARDS SKILLING INDIA

Thu, 01/28/2016 - 10:56 -- geeta.nair

If anyone has taken sincerely Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s clarion call of Skill India, then it has to be this former army man. The decorated soldier’s zeal to help and uplift the downtrodden post retirement catapulted him to a corporate sector where he first nourished the corporate social responsibility (CSR) of the organisation and while nurturing talents he has now been able to bring smile on many faces and promises for miles before he sleeps.

This includes an instance where a young boy, nurtured by Lt. General (Retd) Rajender Singh, will be receiving an award by British Queen in June 2016 at Birmingham. Says, Gen Singh, there may be many award recipients, but this one sounds inspiring as the youth receiving the award is visually impaired. “This special child wanted to study engineering after his plus two but could not in India since he was visually challenged. Somehow he got into Stanford University but then funding was a problem. We took all his financial responsibilities and today we feel proud that he will receive a by Queen,” said Gen (Retd) Rajender Singh, who is leading the front of Skill India Mission in his capacity as CEO of DLF Foundation, Gurgaon.

Singh’s philanthropic move has also helped a Jodhpur Railway Station porter’s ward to pursue MBBS. These children are a result from the Foundation’s Nurturing Talent Programme for talented children from weaker sections of society that picks up poor talented children from rural and urban villages and transfer them to good private English medium schools and groom them.

Talking to the Avenues about his major philanthropic ideas backed by his UN Mission assignments, Singh claims that his foundation has recently launched a number of flagship programmes in the field of education, healthcare and environment. “Our target is to help a million youth over the next decade through our 40 centers in 12 states. By placing them on a progressive career journey, the DLF Foundation will contribute significantly to the overall target of skilling and upskilling the youth of the country promoted by this government,” he said.
