HYDERABAD: More than 4,000 volunteers will be in place to help differently-abled including visually-impaired voters in the city on the election day. Of the total volunteers, 3,000 will be deployed at polling stations in Hyderabad district and rest will be helping voters in Ranga Reddy district.

Speaking to TOI, the officials said that all the arrangements—be it ramps at all polling stations, wheel-chairs, ramp enabled vehicles with one volunteer each, android based GHMC VAADA app, special questions, braille slips, are arranged in all polling stations.
“The volunteers will assist the voters registered as persons with disabilities (PWDs). The vehicle will pick them and drop them back to their home (free of cost) on polling day,” said a top official deputed on election duty from Hyderabad district.

When it comes to Ranga Reddy district, officials said that they needed a total of 1,800 volunteers, whereas, only 1,000 were registered till now. “Ramps, wheelchairs, EVMs and other arrangements are in place. We are looking for more volunteers as we need 800 more help the voters. Rest of them will be arranged by the end of the day,” said E Venkateshwar Rao, Nodal Officer (PwD), Ranga Reddy district.

To assist visually impaired voters, the authorities have already started distributing Braille slips.
For the visually-impaired we are distributing Braille slips, the EVMs also have Braille dots. We are giving training to volunteers so that visually-impaired voters get the best assistance. Out of the 3,000 volunteers we have decided that 2,000 will exclusively assist PWD voters,” said Hari Chandana Dasari GHMC assistant commissioner of Serllingampally.
