The Disabled Students and Youth Association (DSYA) has urged the Vice Chancellor of the Himachal Pradesh University (HPU) to immediately withdraw “wrong and misleading” guidelines for conducting examination of visually impaired and other differently abled students who cannot write, posted on the university portal. In a letter to Prof Sikander Kumar, Mukesh Kumar and Saveena Jahan, convener and co-convener of the DSYA, said the university had violated the directions of the UGC and the Delhi High Court by implementing old guidelines without applying mind. The UGC had directed all universities in February 2019 not to implement the guidelines of 2018 till a panel of scribes is prepared. It had clearly said in this situation, old guidelines issued in 2013 would be applied as directed by the Delhi High Court. But the university did comply with the UGC instructions. The DSYA said in the old guidelines, the qualification of writers was not fixed. But as per the new guidelines, writers must be one class junior to the examinee. Mukesh and Saveena said the university was bound to comply with the instructions issued by the UGC and urged the VC to issue necessary instructions in this regard.
Sports meet at MCM DAV College
The 42nd Annual Athletic Meet was held at the MCM DAV College, Kangra, which was inaugurated by Kangra SDM Jatin Lal. Welcoming the chief guest, Principal Baljeet Patial said the college witnessed excellent results in sports events throughout the year. The torch was lit by a college student, Jatin Kalra. In the 100-m race, Aditya Mahajan got the first position, Aanchal second and Vikas the third position. In the 200-m race, Aanchal, Jatin Kalra and Abhishek got first, second and third positions, respectively. In the 400-m race, Aman, Suryansh and Sahil bagged the first, second and third positions, respectively. In the 800-m race, Vikas, Nitin and Vikas Kumar stood first, second and third, respectively. In 1500-m race, Vikas got the first position, Vikas Kumar second and Ritikesh third position. In the 100-m race (women) Arunima, Kanika and Shagun got first, second and third positions, respectively. In the 200-m race (women), Kanika, Arunima and Nancy got first, second and third positions, respectively. In the 400-m race (women), Nancy, Pratiksha and Bharti got the first, second and third positions, respectively. In shot put, Anmol Thakur stood first, Archit second and Aman Mehra third. Vikas was declared the best athlete in the men’s segment and Karina and Arunima were jointly declared best athletes in the In women’s segment.
Feedback sought on civic facilities
City project coordinator Harkanchan Singh visited St. Bede’s College along with her team to encourage people to fill the citizen feedback form which has questions related to facilities provided by the Municipal Corporation and ways to improve. The aim is to ensure that the authorities can work towards the formation of Shimla as a smart city. Students filled the feedback forms enthusiastically.
Medical Training session ends
A three-day training session for medical officers of Chamba district in screening and management of non-communicable diseases, which was conducted by the health and family welfare department, culminated here. The Chief Medical Officer (CMO), Chamba, emphasised the need to make people aware of non-communicable diseases’ screening, Sahara scheme, Himcare and Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojna. District Programme Officer Dr Harit Puri said 23 medical officers were trained during this training session. They were imparted intensive training regarding the screening of non-communicable diseases like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer and stroke.
Reduce contract service: Teachers
The Himachal Pradesh College Teachers Sangh has demanded that the period for regularisation of teachers appointed on contract in various colleges be reduced from three to two years. The Sangh also demanded that the appointment of college teachers be made on a regular basis and the contract system in education be abolished. Regular appointments are being made to Class-I posts in ministerial services but in the education sector, even the class-I posts are being filled through contract appointments, the Sangh rued.
