Covid19 Stories from the ground #9

Visually impaired siblings, Ravi and Shobha lost their parents at an early age. Orphaned and financially weak, they never got an opportunity to study. They live with an aunt in Belagavi district of Karnataka, who is also disabled. The family of three is dependent on the Disability Pension provided by the government.

As Ravi grew older, he realized the need for education and employment. He wanted a respectable life with an income of his own and not merely depend on the state for a few thousand rupees. In April 2018, Eyeway guided Ravi to enroll for open schooling. He is now pursuing his pre-university course.

The recent pandemic and the lockdown has hit them hard as they haven’t received their due pension for the past two months. With no money to pay off rent or buy food, the family is desperate for help. As Ravi battles with everyday sustenance, completing college to earn a decent living seems like a distant dream.

The government has announced welfare packages for the vulnerable, including advance Disability Pension. But who is responsible for ensuring that the money reaches the people in need? When existing provisions are not implemented thoroughly, how beneficial will the new schemes be?

Eyeway is trying to assist as many as we can. We are seeking donations to help visually impaired individuals and families. If you would like to contribute, please click the link below to donate.
