Helping see through the darkness

They say when the going gets tough, the tough get going. Eyeway has witnessed several accounts of visually impaired people from across India, who’ve overcome insurmountable challenges through grit and guidance. We bring you another such story.

Farzana Shaikh was born sighted to a middle class family in Mumbai, Maharashtra. Just as she completed Class X, she lost her eye sight after contracting brain fever. The whole family was in shock and the young girl’s life suddenly came to a standstill.

Three years later, a cousin told her about the Eyeway helpline. Farzana shared her distress of losing out on education and inability to pursue her interests.  Our counselor consoled her, charting out a new path to step out of the darkness.

On Eyeway’s advice, Farzana enrolled for rehabilitation training at National Association for the Blind (NAB) where she learnt mobility, computer usage with screen reading software and other basic life skills. She also resumed her studies via open schooling.

Farzana regained her confidence, completed Class XII and took admission in regular college. All this in one year after contacting Eyeway. Seeing her zeal, the counselor pushed her to take up a career oriented course in computers. Fond of music and dance, she also joined choreography and instrumental music lessons at NAB.

Farzana’s life is back on track. She is happy and hopeful of a better tomorrow.
