An organisation working for the help and rehabilitation of the physically challenged, Punarbasa, on Sunday organised its 4th Annual Punarbasa Samartha Samman for the physically challenged persons, who contributed to the society by setting an example.
A function in this regard was organised at Amar Udyan in which State Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities Dr Minati Behera attended as chief guest and praised the effort taken by Punarbasa.
While addressing to the gathering, Dr Behera stated that persons with disabilities are a neglected community in the society. They have been leading a worst life and hence, steps should be taken to identify them for bringing them to the mainstream.
The State Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities has been working for providing support, co-operation and justice to the neglected disabled persons. To provide social security and empowerment to the disabled persons, the State Government has started Social Security and Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities Department in the State since July last.
Punarbasa bestowed the Punarbasa Samarth Samman-2015 on physically challenged Dr Kedarnath Senapati, the 4th Doctoral fellow of IIT Bhubaneswar and general secretary of Orissa Blind Association visually impaired Bihari Nayak. Apart
from them, a couple of disabled persons of Kendrapada, Urbashi Nayak and
Ranjit Ranjan Nayak, were also felicitated.
A bi-monthly and bi-lingual newspaper was released on the stage. Chief physiotherapy of Olatapur-based Nirtara Professor Patitapaban Mohanty, senior doctor and columnist Dr Alekha Chandra Das, social worker Prasant Kumar Das, District Social Welfare Officer Biraja Prasad Pati, Pravas Kumar Das and Punarbasa advisor Biraja Routray were present.
