The Kashmir chapter of the National Federation of the Blind, in collaboration with the Dagger Division of the Army, has opened a school for the education of visually-impaired children at Deewanbagh in Baramulla district.
Looking at the fresh innocence on the faces of these children, it’s all too easy to forget they can’t see. But then, there can be certain brightness about darkness.

For these kids, that bright moment is now. Opening of a school dedicated to the special needs of visually impaired children has given their lives needed direction. The school was inaugurated by Major General (Retired) Raj Mehta. It was an emotional moment for general secretary of the Kashmir chapter of National Federation of the Blind, Nabi Azad. Azad knows what it is to grapple with the dark and he explains it rather succinctly.

In that context, opening of the school acquires monumental importance for visually impaired children in the violence ridden Valley. It may not be the ultimate solution, but it is a good enough start.
The 46 Rashtriya Rifles Battalion, under the aegis of the Dagger Artillery Brigade, provided furniture and other equipment worth around Rs 4,44,500. This was done as part of a project to equip the school with Braille Slates, Braille Books, Papers and other equipment necessary for the education of the visually impaired.
