Beat the odds & chase your dreams

21-year-old Anjali Sharma, from East Sikkim is now a champion over her disability by sheer hard-work and determination. During her 10th standard, she came down with high fever. Initially, the family couldn’t fathom the magnitude of impact this could have on her health and was taken to a local doctor who just prescribed medicines for a common cold. However, the persistent fever and deteriorating eyesight arose doubts which led the family for multiple consultations. Anjali was diagnosed with brain tumour and they were directed to AIIMS Delhi.
In AIIMS Delhi, she was successfully treated for brain tumour but couldn’t restore her vision. The doctor tried to instil confidence in young Anjali by suggesting ways for her empowerment. This played an integral role in her going back to school and pursuing her education. She completed her 10th and 12th classes from Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS) with the help of parents, friends, teachers and scribe. The awareness of teachers and authorities in KVS also contributed in creating a hopeful future for Anjali. Such immense support and the resultant confidence helped her score 95% in her 12th board exams. She was lauded by the then Ministry of Human Resources and Development (MHRD) minister, Smriti Irani, for her achievement. Her continuous hard-work helped her complete graduation in English by 2018.
A suggestion made by her friend on the screen reader software to make life easier evoked her curiosity which led her to find Eyeway on the internet. Following which, she contacted the Helpdesk in August 2018 to know more about the advantages of using a laptop enabled by screen reader software. The counselor gave her a step-by-step guidance on the uses, downloading and installation of NVDA (NonVisual Desktop Access), a screen reading software. During the conversation, the counselor understood that Anjali was not trained to use NVDA and realised she required adequate training on that front. As per the suggestions given, she has enrolled in a 4-months computer training course at the National Association for the Blind (NAB), Delhi. She also shared her interest in government jobs and enquired on any coaching available for this. Therefore, she was informed about the All India Confederation for the Blind (AICB), Delhi where she can avail free coaching for competitive exams along with advanced computer training.
Anjali and her family have expressed her gratitude for the immense support and guidance provided.
