Beyond Doubt, Toward Determination

Gopi Kishan, a 22-year-old from Patna, Bihar, was born blind into a modest family where resources were limited and awareness about disability was even more scarce. His father runs a small flour mill, his mother manages the household, and together they raise five children. In a society where blindness is often met with doubt, Gopi’s early years were marked by uncertainty about what his future might hold.

Growing up, everyday tasks required adaptation. Gopi learned to rely on sound, touch, and memory to understand his surroundings. Education brought its own challenges. Access to Braille books was limited, and trained teachers were not always available. Yet, what stood out most about Gopi was not the barriers he faced, but his refusal to give up. He did not want sympathy—he wanted opportunity.

A significant turning point came about four years ago when he connected with the Helpline. Through counselling, guidance, and support such as accessible study materials and assistance in arranging writers for examinations, Gopi began rebuilding his academic path. He enrolled for his Class 10 through the National Institute of Open Schooling, which offered the flexibility he needed. Passing his Class 10 examination became a defining milestone, replacing hesitation within his family with confidence in his abilities.

Motivated by this success, Gopi went on to enroll in a government school in Bihar to complete his Class 12. The coursework demanded greater discipline and consistency, but he remained focused and successfully cleared his exams.

Today, Gopi is preparing to pursue graduation from the School of Open Learning at University of Delhi. For him, a degree is more than an academic achievement—it is a bridge to competitive examinations and stable employment. His dream is to secure a government job, become financially independent, and support his parents with dignity.
