Breaking Workplace Barriers Through Accessibility

Shubham Agarwal, a 37-year-old from Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, has lived with visual impairment since the age of three, when a viral fever significantly reduced his vision. From an early age, he learned that moving forward would require not just determination, but constant adaptation.

After facing accessibility challenges in a mainstream school, Shubham continued his education through a specialized institution where he learned Braille and independent living skills. These years helped him build the confidence and resilience that would later define his professional journey.

In 2015, Shubham achieved an important milestone by securing a clerical position at Bank of Baroda. For him, this was more than a job - it was the beginning of financial independence and a career he had long aspired to build. But once he transitioned into a computer-based desk role, a new challenge emerged. Without assistive technology, handling digital tasks such as passbook updates, ATM issuance, and cheque book processing became extremely difficult.

This was when he reached out to Eyeway.

Eyeway not only introduced him to JAWS, but also helped him understand how to advocate for accessibility within his workplace. While the process of getting the licensed software approved was underway, Eyeway suggested a practical interim solution, the 40-minute demo version of JAWS. This temporary access became crucial, allowing Shubham to continue performing his daily responsibilities without interruption.

At the same time, Eyeway strengthened his case by providing contact details of authorized vendors, making it easier for the bank to procure the licensed version of the software. This support ensured that the request moved beyond theory and into actionable steps.

The process required patience and persistence, but after several months of continuous follow-up, the licensed software was finally installed on his office computer.

Today, Shubham works independently and efficiently, carrying out his responsibilities with confidence. His journey reflects how the right information, practical solutions, and continued support can transform workplace barriers into pathways of inclusion and empowerment.
