Building Independence Through Small Business

Sunny Khokale, a 34-year-old from Nagpur, Maharashtra, has faced several challenges in his life but has worked hard to build a stable future.

When he was 12, Sunny lost his father in an accident. With financial difficulties, he, along with his elder brother and mother, had to leave his studies and return to Nagpur. At 14, Sunny began working at a printing press as a helper. Through dedication, he was promoted to operator over the next nine years. Together, the brothers managed to support their family and even built a house in a busy market area.

At the age of 25, Sunny’s life changed again when a chemical accident at the printing press caused him to lose his eyesight. After two years of unsuccessful treatments, he struggled to adjust to this new reality.

During this period, a friend connected him with Eyeway, a support service for people with visual impairment. A counsellor advised him to attend a rehabilitation course at NAB India in Mumbai to learn independent living skills. They also suggested exploring small business options.

Sunny followed this advice and, after regaining confidence through the training, decided to open a shop in his house located in a market area. He started by selling snacks and later added items like towels, napkins, toys, and dress materials. His shop has now been running successfully for three years, earning him a daily profit of ₹500–800.

Recently, Eyeway suggested he start using social media platforms like WhatsApp, Facebook, and Instagram to promote his products and reach more customers. Sunny is hopeful this will help him grow his business further.

His journey shows how, with persistence and the right guidance, it is possible to rebuild life after setbacks.
