Covid19: Stories from the ground #1

When PM Narendra Modi announced the first nationwide lockdown of 21 days, many were left trapped in places away from home.

18-year-old Amit Kumar who is visually impaired, had travelled to Delhi from his hometown in Bihar to appear for his Class 10 exams. Unfortunately, he was stuck at a hostel for blind students in the capital where he was residing temporarily.

When Amit called the Eyeway helpline, he was desperate to go home. He complained of poor hygiene conditions at the hostel, lack of supplies including sanitization products as well as other essentials. He felt the forty odd visually impaired students were at high risk of contracting the virus under such circumstances.

Eyeway raised the issue with the concerned authorities and the Delhi Disability Commissioner asked a member of the Delhi Commission for Protection of Child Rights to visit the institution. Post the DCPCR’s verification of the matter, hygiene and safety kits were supplied to each student and a request for food supplies was registered with the area’s Sub Divisional Magistrate. The local authorities were also alerted to clean the facility.
The Eyeway helpline has been receiving distress calls from different parts of the country and we are trying our best to help. We are grateful to the authorities for their quick response.

If you know of anyone with a disability who needs help during this crisis, please call Eyeway helpline 1800 53 20469 and we will connect them with individuals and organizations that could offer support.
