Earning While Learning: A Journey Forward

Suraj Gupta, a 24-year-old from Delhi, comes from a family of six that includes his parents, two sisters, and two brothers. His father runs a small shoe-making factory, while his mother manages the household. Suraj completed his Class 10 and 12 from government schools in Delhi and is currently in the first year of a BA programme through the School of Open Learning, University of Delhi.

Born with low vision and holding a 60% disability certificate, Suraj has always faced challenges in accessing employment. With limited family income, he felt a strong need to become financially independent while continuing his studies. However, finding suitable work proved difficult due to his visual impairment and lack of accessible opportunities.

Suraj came to know about Eyeway through a WhatsApp group and decided to reach out for guidance. After understanding his situation, the Eyeway counsellor explored employment options that would match his abilities and goals. He was advised to consider massage therapy as a viable skill-based livelihood and was guided toward training opportunities.

Suraj travelled to Chennai, where he completed a 15-day massage training programme. Soon after, he secured a job at the same centre. Receiving his first salary was a significant milestone for him—it gave him confidence and a sense of independence. Later, he was transferred from the Chennai branch to the Bengaluru branch, allowing him to continue working while staying connected to better opportunities.

Today, Suraj is earning while continuing his studies. His income has begun to ease the financial pressure on his family, something he takes great pride in. Looking ahead, his long-term goal is to secure a government job. Eyeway continues to support him by guiding him toward competitive exam coaching and future planning.
