From Hesitation to Hope

Sagar Dhamankar was born in 1997 in Chandur Railway, a small village in Maharashtra’s Amravati district. Visually impaired since early childhood, Sagar faced numerous challenges growing up. As the only son in a middle-class family, his parents were overprotective and initially hesitant to send him to a residential school for the blind. Instead, they enrolled him in a regular village school, where he struggled to see the blackboard and was often mocked by classmates. These hardships eventually led him to withdraw from school, despite being enrolled from Grade 1 to 4.

Realizing their mistake, his parents later admitted him to a residential special school. Sagar restarted his education from Grade 1 and steadily progressed, eventually completing his graduation. As he neared the end of his studies, he became aware of the growing responsibility to support his aging parents and three sisters. Determined to become financially independent, he began exploring employment opportunities.

That’s when he came across Roshni Ka Karwaan, a radio series by Eyeway, also available on YouTube. Inspired by the stories, he reached out to the Eyeway helpline for guidance. The team provided him with counselling and encouraged him to look beyond government jobs—to explore roles in the private sector and consider small business ideas.

Empowered by this guidance, Sagar shifted his focus and came across a vacancy for an Office Attendant at a Honda showroom in Amravati. Though initially hesitant, he applied with Eyeway’s support—and was selected, becoming the first visually impaired employee at the showroom.

Today, Sagar is employed, financially independent, and supporting his family. He credits Eyeway for empowering him at a crucial point in his life. His story proves that with the right support and determination, it’s possible to overcome even the most difficult challenges.
