Rediscovering Confidence After Late Blindness

Jyoti Biswas, a 39-year-old woman from Lucknow, once believed that her life had completely fallen apart after losing her eyesight. Today, however, she is rebuilding her confidence, independence, and hopes for the future through determination, training, and the right support.

Jyoti completed her schooling from St. Joseph Convent College and later pursued a Bachelor of Arts degree from Navyug Degree College. She also completed her Master’s degree in Sociology from Rajarshi Tandon Open University. Before losing her vision, she successfully ran a computer centre and managed both her professional and personal responsibilities independently.

In 2008, Jyoti married and built a happy family with her husband and two sons. Life was moving smoothly until 2014, when she started experiencing severe headaches. Medical examinations later revealed that she had a brain tumour. Following surgery, Jyoti lost her eyesight completely.

The sudden loss of vision deeply affected her emotionally and mentally. Along with adjusting to blindness, she also had to face discouragement from people around her. Many even told her that she would never be able to achieve anything again. Over time, Jyoti began losing confidence and struggled to see any possibility for her future.

Everything started changing in 2025, when a visually impaired person informed her about Eyeway. Hoping to find some guidance, Jyoti contacted the organisation.

During a call with one of the Eyeway counsellors, Jyoti openly shared the emotional distress and hopelessness she had been experiencing for years. Through continuous motivation and counselling support, she slowly began understanding that blindness did not mean the end of independence or opportunity. She was guided on how visually impaired persons can navigate challenges, rebuild confidence, and lead fulfilling lives.

Recognising her interest and previous experience with computers, Eyeway encouraged Jyoti to restart skill development training. She was connected with VI Foundation, where she completed a three-month basic computer course. During the training, she learned to use screen reader technology and gradually regained confidence in operating computers independently.

Today, Jyoti can navigate and use computers fluently with the help of screen readers, restoring the efficiency and confidence she once had before losing her sight.

In addition to computer training, she also received mobility training from Jayati Bhartam. With the help of a white cane and orientation techniques, Jyoti can now travel independently from one place to another, something that once seemed impossible after her surgery.

Slowly, Jyoti has begun rebuilding not just her skills, but also her self-belief and independence. She now looks toward the future with renewed confidence and hope.

Today, with continued support from Eyeway, efforts are also being made to help her access suitable employment opportunities so that she can become financially independent and continue creating a better future for herself and her family.
