Skills That Open Doors

Jamal Babu, a 32-year-old from Supaul district in Bihar, has been visually impaired since birth due to an issue with his optic nerve. He grew up in a farming family with limited awareness of how a blind child could pursue education. Despite the lack of guidance, Jamal showed determination to support himself and his loved ones. Over the years, he tried different ways to earn a living.

Between 2002 and 2005, Jamal made and sold toys by hand. Later, an acquaintance trained him in basic electrical work, and from 2006 to 2010, he repaired sockets, 2-pin cables, and chargers. From 2011 to 2015, he worked in nickel polishing, servicing two-wheeler vehicles. Each of these jobs helped him survive, but he still longed for stability and a clear direction.

In 2017, Jamal found himself at home without work, struggling to see a way forward. A turning point came in 2023 when he attended a job fair organized by Samarthanam Trust. Though he didn’t secure employment there, he was introduced to the Eyeway helpline, which soon became a source of guidance and encouragement.

When Jamal contacted Eyeway, the counsellors listened to his situation and began connecting him with opportunities. The first step was education. With Eyeway’s help, he enrolled in the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS). By October 2024, he was admitted to the 12th class, with study materials arranged in accessible formats.

Eyeway also encouraged him to build vocational skills. He was brought to Delhi and enrolled in a Massage Therapy course at the Blind Relief Association. Alongside this, Jamal is learning spoken English, computer skills, and mobility training—skills that will help him lead a more independent life.

Looking ahead, Jamal’s dream is to secure a government job. Eyeway is committed to supporting him by arranging scribes for his exams and connecting him with free coaching for competitive tests. With his perseverance and the right guidance, Jamal is building a future where he can be self-reliant and contribute meaningfully to society.
