Siddhant is a resident of Vaishali district, Bihar. He is 100% visually impaired and has been living with blindness since birth due to an optic nerve condition. Despite facing significant challenges from an early age, Siddhant has shown remarkable determination and resilience in pursuing his education and career goals.
Siddhant completed his schooling through the open education system. He passed both his Class 10 and Class 12 examinations through the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS). His father, Mr. Mohan Kumar, runs a small hardware shop, while his mother, Mrs. Aakriti Devi, is a homemaker. Due to his educational needs, Siddhant spent much of his childhood in hostels from the age of three.
In 2023, Siddhant contacted our helpline seeking employment opportunities. He informed us that he was looking for a job and needed guidance regarding available opportunities. After understanding his situation and aspirations, we counselled him about the long-term importance of higher education and encouraged him to continue his studies before entering the workforce.
Following this guidance, Siddhant enrolled in the Bachelor of Arts programme in Political Science at the University of Delhi. He has successfully completed two years of his graduation and is currently pursuing his third year.
During his academic journey, Siddhant faced a major setback when his smartphone was stolen. As he relied heavily on his phone to access online lectures, educational content on YouTube, and study materials, the loss severely affected his studies. Using a friend’s phone, he contacted our helpline and explained how the lack of a smartphone was disrupting his education and limiting his access to learning resources.
Understanding the urgency of the situation, we guided him towards the Government of India’s ADIP Scheme, under which assistive devices are provided to persons with disabilities through ALIMCO. We coordinated with the concerned authorities and facilitated the process for Siddhant to receive a Visual Impairment (VI) Kit.
Through this support, Siddhant received several essential assistive devices.
These devices significantly improved his access to education and daily activities, enabling him to continue his studies without interruption.
To further enhance his employability and digital skills, we also facilitated his admission to a Computer Training Course conducted by the National Association for the Blind (NAB), Goa, which commenced in March. This opportunity has helped him develop valuable computer skills and prepare for future employment.
Another challenge Siddhant faced was spoken English. He recognized that communication skills would play a vital role in his future career and confidence. To address this need, we connected him with the RYSE Foundation’s English Speaking Course in April. Initially, the lack of a smartphone prevented him from attending the classes regularly. However, after receiving the assistive devices, he was able to resume his training successfully.
Today, Siddhant is actively pursuing his graduation, continuing his English-speaking classes, and preparing to attend advanced training opportunities in Goa. His journey demonstrates how timely guidance, educational support, assistive technology, and skill-development opportunities can transform the life of a young person with visual impairment.
Siddhant’s story is a powerful example of determination, perseverance, and the impact of inclusive support systems. With the right assistance and his unwavering commitment, he is steadily moving towards a brighter and more independent future.
