Towards a better tomorrow

Twenty-two-year old Ranjeet Kumar was born with Retinopathy of prematurity, a blinding disorder in premature infants. A resident of Mohammadpur village in Uttar Pradesh, his parents depend on a small family farm to make a living. Despite the financial constraints, Ranjeet’s parents  visited various hospitals with the hope that his eyesight would be restored but their efforts were futile.
Ranjeet’s family lacked the awareness and resources to raise a blind child but they encouraged him to join a primary school in their village. At the age of twelve, Ranjeet was identified by an education officer of his block and enrolled into a special school where he learnt braille and mobility. With support from teachers and friends, he managed to complete class 12 from a mainstream school in his district.
Determined to complete his education to achieve an independent life, Ranjeet set out to enroll into a private college for bachelor’s degree. But what stood between him and his dream was a sum of seven thousand rupees for college fees. A friend suggested him to contact Eyeway for support.
The Eyeway Helpdesk counsellor sprang into action to ensure that Ranjeet’s fees was arranged in time. As a result, he secured admission in the college for first year B.A programme, where he has found supportive teachers and friends.
Ranjeet aspires to be a teacher not only for financial independence but to be able to impart knowledge to other children who come from financially disadvantaged families. He is also keen to enroll for online computer training but lacks the resources to buy an assistive device.
Lack of access to resources and quality education keeps blind people from realizing their potential.
