The Ranga Rao Memorial School for Disabled by NR Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the NR Group, celebrated the 70th Independence Day on the school premises on Monday.

C.S. Yogananda, Professor and Head, Department of Mathematics, Sri Jayachamarajendra College of Engineering, who is said to have contributed in the technology that assists visually impaired students in education, along with Guru, Chairman, NR Group, hoisted the national flag.

The parade by the children was attractive, and the students also rendered patriotic songs.

Mr. Yogananda has developed an Optical Character Recognition for Kannada and Tamil languages and has plans to address text to speech for Kannada language. By aiding tools, the professor has enhanced education for visually impaired students, a release from the school said.

In his address, Mr. Yogananda said, “Education is the only way to help the visual challenged to break free from the vicious circle of difference between a normal human and a visual challenged person. We are glad that we are able to be a catalyst in bringing about a change in the lives of the children and thereby build a strong future for our country.”

“Celebrating Independence Day with the students of this school was a wonderful experience. The enthusiasm, patriotism and liveliness of the students are incredibly contagious … you can feel the energy around them,” Mr. Guru said.
