Visually impaired student gets doctorate at central varsity
Clears the National Eligibility Test (NET) as well as the Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) examination
As the Chief Justice of India, Justice Surya Kant, awarded the PhD degree to Bhadur Lal during the 12th convocation ceremony of the Central University of Haryana (CUH) in Mahendragarh, the old adage, “Where there is a will, there is a way,” was underlined once again.
Punjab and Haryana High Court Chief Justice Sheel Nagu, IIT (Ropar) Director Dr Rajeev Ahuja, and CUH Vice-Chancellor Prof Tankeshwar Kumar were among those who felicitated Lal before a large gathering and applauded him.
As per official sources, Lal is the first visually impaired student to have completed a PhD degree from the university. “The journey is still on... it’s just a milestone,” observes Lal, son of farmer Sohan Lal and homemaker Shankari Devi from Jammu.
From pursuing his early education by listening to lectures recorded on audio cassettes to being awarded a doctorate by the Chief Justice of India, the young man has come a long way.
Lal has also cleared the National Eligibility Test (NET) as well as the Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) examination conducted by the University Grants Commission (UGC).
The topic of his PhD thesis — “Education in Inclusive Settings: Exploring the Mitigation Strategies for Visually Impaired Students in Higher Education Institutions” — reflects his commitment to doing something meaningful for others like him.
Lal also delivers motivational lectures for physically challenged individuals as well as other students, for which he does not accept any remuneration.
When asked about his future plans, Lal stated that he wants to pursue post-doctoral research and take up a teaching position.
