Visually-impaired students of the University of Hyderabad (UoH) can now record lectures in the classroom and follow them later at their convenience, all thanks to the Angel Pocket Readers that they have been provided.

The device that functions like a talking Digital Pocket Daisy Player, E-book Reader, Music Player and Radio-cum-Voice Recorder, can be used to record classroom lectures, listen to scanned academic data and also data downloaded from the internet. The device was handed over to the students by Vice-Chancellor Ramakrishna Ramaswamy.

The most striking feature of the device is that it can read e-books.

Moreover, it can also read act like a memory stick, said S. Rajagopal, chairman of the Empowered Committee for Differently-abled persons at UoH.

He said 63 first-year students were given the readers, each costing around Rs.8,000.

Doctoral student Rajender said the device alerts him with musical buttons to prevent data deletion by mistake. Swathi and Madhulika of the Integrated Masters course said the device reads text files and typed documents and would be of immense help to them.
