Walkathon in Bengaluru spreads awareness on cricket for blind

Tue, 12/13/2016 - 10:52 -- geeta.nair

The 12th edition of Samarthanam Bengaluru Walkathon 2016 saw the participation of over 10,000 people from various walks of life.

Corporate employees, NGOs, students and the differently abled, both young and old, showed their support for Cricket for the Blind by joining the walk with the theme, “I support Cricket for the Blind... Do you?” that was held at Kittur Rani Chennamma Stadium in Bengaluru.

The initiative was aimed at supporting cricket for the visually impaired and spread awareness on the second T20 World Cup Cricket for the Blind 2017, to be hosted in India from the next month.

Demo match
Ahead of the walkathon, a demo match was played by the players of the Indian Blind Cricket Team. Wheel chairs were also distributed by Samarthanam for the disabled on the occasion.

The walkathon was flagged off by Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy. The minister said, “Sport is a great way to bring normalcy to the lives of the differently abled and provide them with a certain degree of independence. Close to half of the world’s visually impaired population is in India and each one of us can make a huge difference to their lives by pledging our eyes. I request everyone to join the eye donation movement.”

The funds raised through the walkathon will be used for organising the second T20 World Cup Cricket for the Blind, scheduled to be played between January 29 and February 12, 2017.
