How “The Valuable 500” is driving the recognition of people with disabilities.

Tue, 03/17/2020 - 10:34 -- geeta.nair

The society we live in celebrates able-bodied individuals so much that most of us don’t realize that the world is becoming less and less inclusive of those who are different. To begin with, every workplace must be made inclusive and inclusive not just from the point of view of gender parity, but from the perspective of people who are physically different. Vijaylakshmi’s winning vision

Dr V Vijaylakshmi was born with Retinitis Pigmentosa that left her visually impaired at an early age. This, however, did not stop her from realizing her dreams. Born to a lower-middle-class family in Bangalore, Vijaylakshmi braved through the disabling attitudes of peers and teachers at her school, becoming the first distinction holder in the State Board examinations. Her determination and passion for Carnatic music resulted in earning a Doctoral degree in the subject.

Does the Indian media really care about the disabled?

Fri, 03/13/2020 - 12:20 -- geeta.nair

As I write this column with the intention of drawing attention to a large section of Indian population that lives on the margins of our society, I am thinking to myself: Does Anyone Care.

Does the media care? Do parents of ‘able’ children care? Do the politicians or bureaucrats care? Do schools and universities care? Do businesses care? Does the average individual care? And the resounding answer to all these questions is ‘probably not enough’.  Not enough to bring about a revolutionary change in the way persons with disabilities lead their lives or how we treat them.
