“Never be defeated, Never give up”, said Pranjal Patil, the country’s first visually challenged woman IAS officer, as she assumed charge as the Sub Collector of Thiruvananthapuram here on Monday.

“...we should never be defeated and we should never give up because with our efforts all of us will get that one breakthrough which we want”, the 30-year old Kerala cadre officer told mediapersons here.

Thiruvananthapuram: Pranjal Patil, India's first visually challenged woman IAS officer on Monday took charge as Sub-Collector of Thiruvananthapuram.

A warm reception was arranged to welcome her as she took over from former collector B Gopalakrishnan. She served as an assistant collector in Ernakulam for a year in 2018 before taking charge here.

Twenty-seven-year-old K. Shibli, who is visually impaired since birth, is now an inspiration to several students at Kannur University.

On World Sight Day on Thursday, Shibli, who is the first visually challenged student to enrol as a PhD scholar in business management at the university, stood as a role model for many differently abled.

Differently abled get ‘privilege cards’

Rajan Eye Care Hospital launched an initiative to distribute ‘privilege cards’ to differently abled persons. The event was organised as part of World Sight Day, observed on the second Thursday of October every year, said Mohan Rajan, the chairman of the hospital.

There are around 180 to 200 million blind people all over the world. The theme for this year is vision first, he said.

Blindness In India Reduced By 47 Per Cent Since 2007: Report

NEW DELHI, Oct 10 (PTI): The prevalence of blindness in India has come down by around 47 per cent since 2007, according to a government survey released on Thursday, indicating that the country is close to achieving the WHO”s goal of reducing it to 0.3 per cent of the total population by 2020.

Diabetes leading to blindness: Survey

Fast growing diabetes is leading to blindness and visual impairment due to poor blood sugar control among patients. According to the diabetes and diabetic retinopathy survey by the AIIMS conducted between 2015 to 2019, one in eight persons above 50 years in India is a diabetic.

One in every 46 diabetics is blind and one in seven diabetics has some form of impairment in their vision due to high blood sugar levels

Coming soon, a cheap kindle for visually impaired

A kindle for visually impaired students is expected to hit the markets in six months — one that wouldn’t cost a bomb. The International Institute of Information Technology, Bengaluru (IIIT-B), has tied up with IT firm Touchetech Labs and non-profit organisation Vision Empower to produce what may be India’s cheapest Refreshable Braille Reader (RBD), or the kindle for visually impaired.
