Our readers and writers are people who open up the printed world to us leaving all their work aside. Writing an exam without a pen for a sighted student, is as impossible for a blind student without a reader and a writer! Hence taking this as an opportunity, Blind Graduate’s Forum of India (BGFI) makes a small attempt to express our heartfelt gratitude towards the readers and writers, and as well felicitate our

Honor launches AI-powered app for the visually impaired

Beijing, Sep. 8 (IANS): Chinese smartphone manufacturer Honor has launched its new AI-powered app ‘PocketVision at IFA 2019, which aims to help people read documents, menus and other hard to read texts.

“With the launch of this app, we hope to create an enhanced reading experience for people all around the world, enabling a greater sense of independence and giving people with low vision the confidence to unlock their potential and pursue their

passions,” George Zhao, President of Honor said in a statement.

Improve ‘sick’ eye banking system in the state: NGO

Umang Foundation has urged the government to bring immediate improvement in the existing ‘sick’ eye banking system in the state so that more persons with corneal blindness are able to see again. Due to lack of infrastructure and management, the eye bank is not getting sufficient number of eyes for transplant.

NHS England is to pay for a cutting-edge genetic treatment that will save children with a rare inherited disorder from going blind.

A one-off injection will prevent babies born with poor sight because of an inherited retinal dystrophies disorder from losing their vision entirely, which usually happens during childhood.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) told the Bombay High Court on Thursday that it is coming up with a mobile application in November, which will help visually-impaired people identify currency notes and coins. However, referring to the situation in Kashmir, the court asked how it could help a visually-impaired person.

India suffers from a significant shortage of donor corneas along with a waiting period of over six months for corneal transplants among patients suffering from corneal blindness across the country. Blindness maybe a result of several conditions like cataract, refractive error, glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and corneal blindness that stands as the 4th leading cause of blindness across the world.

Today on Teachers Day we start a month-long campaign called #ThankYouTeacher on teachers who are making a difference to the lives of people with disabilities. Our first story is on three teachers in Bengaluru. Common Admission Test (CAT) and banking entrance exams can be hard to crack for visually impaired aspirants given the multiple barriers in school and college. Srilatha Yegneshwar, Satyavani Vempati and Mamata Mutt are helping to break that glass ceiling.

Ludo, Snakes & Ladders among popular board games made accessible for blind kids at Mumbai school

Ludo and Snakes and Ladders are board games that many children love to play. Thanks to heritage architect and access consultant Siddhant Shah, these games can now be played by children who are blind and low vision as well.

Games period has now become cause for much excitement at the Kamla Mehta Blind School in Dadar, Mumbai. Everyday you find students gathered around a table playing Snakes and Ladders, Ludo, X&O to name a few.
