Visually impaired, blind voters to get braille voter slips in Lok Sabha polls

Visually impaired and blind voters will be provided with braille voter slips in the Lok Sabha elections due this summer.

Braille is a script with raised dots that can be read with the fingers by people who are blind or who have low vision.

It is a tactile reading and writing system used by blind and visually impaired people who cannot access print material.

CHENNAI: Following the decades-old tradition, the National Association for the Blind in association with O2 Health Studio organised a Car Rally for the Blind on February 3 at Savera Hotel. The first rally was held in Mumbai, and Chennai followed in 1989. Even after decades, the objective remains the same. It is still one of the most inclusive sports events for the differently-abled.

On National Voters Day, Karnataka government pledges accessible voting for everyone

National Voter's day on 25 January is a day dedicated to bringing together the youth to vote and take part in the political process. This year the focus was on disabled voters across many states with Karnataka taking the
lead to introduce measures to make voting accessible to all, a major challenge given the inaccessibility of voting booths.

Blind Cricket

EnAble Community is organizing a Blind Cricket as a part of Sports Community, the passion of sports among persons with disability. The volunteers and visually impaired candidates will be paired together in teams and play cricket. The volunteers will be blindfolded during the game.

Visually impaired persons receive Braille EPIC cards

The district administration on Friday began distributing Braille Electors Photo Identity Card (EPIC) to five persons with visual disabilities at the National Voters’ Day celebration at the town hall.

Braille EPIC cards are broader compared to normal EPIC cards.

According to Deputy Commissioner Sasikanth Sentil S., there are 10,331 voters in Dakshina Kannada who are physically disabled.

Of them 300 have visual disabilities and they will receive Braille EPIC cards ahead of Lok Sabha elections.

KOCHI: Kerala Blind School Society (KBBS), Aluva has proved that disability will not be a deterrent in achieving one's dream by bagging the overall championship once again in the state special school fair held at Kasargod. The school, established in 1962, has been winning the coveted title every year and hasn't given away the first place in the state-level band competition for the last 21 years.
The school which became aided in 1995 is managed by a governing body of an 18-member-committee constituted by the CSI Marthoma church.

CHENNAI: In January 2017, when we met Vasanth Raghuvir, managing trustee of the Shakti Foundation ahead of their 27th annual fundraiser concert, she shared a positive observation with CE, “The ‘pity factor’ towards persons with disabilities (PwD) is slowly fading away. Another perceptible advancement is that a lot of young PwDs have got married to able-bodied persons. They share work, run households and also work. Acceptance is slowly growing in society. It’s not sympathy that they need but empathy.”

Sports Day for Handicapped: Min encourages children

Minister for Religious Trusts and Endowments, Public Relations, Law and Legislative Affairs, Science and Technology and Aviation, PC Sharma boosted children in Sports Day Progarmme organized for handicapped children at Bhojpur Club Ground here on Sunday.

He said that sports transmit zeal in life. He salutes all those, who are making constant efforts to bring happiness in the life of handicapped children.

Sharma further mentioned that differently abled children are full of incredible talents.
