In a first for India, Mizoram chief minister Lal Thanhawla last week inaugurated the Centre for Disability Studies at the Mizoram University in Aizawl. The Centre has been set up by the Department of Person with Disabilities, under the aegis of Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment.

The Chief Election Commissioner OP Rawat on Wednesday announced that the Commission has decided to establish auxiliary polling stations for the people with disabilities (PwDs) during elections. The CEC said that disability coordinators would be appointed at the levels of assembly constituencies, districts and States.

BENGALURU:The Department for Empowerment of Differently-abled and Senior Citizens has decided to write to the Railway Board objecting to the disabled coach being placed at the end of the trains. This comes close on the heels of two knife-yielding men robbing a differently-abled woman passenger in the differently-abled coach on Bengaluru-Mangaluru-Kannur train on June 28.

To give loans to disabled, corporation wants government guarantee

BENGALURU:Differently-abled people in the state have been unable to get loans from National Handicapped Finance and Development Corporation (NHFDC) for a little more than a year now.

The corporation was hit when 664 people had taken loans in the past but did not pay back. As a result, the corporation stopped giving out loans and insisted that the state government give a bank guarantee for those taking loans, something that the government is unwilling to do without a proper screening mechanism in place.

Election Commission to consider vote-from-home facility for people with disabilities

The Election Commission of India (ECI) is clearly committed to the idea of making elections accessible for people with disabilities across India. Apart from voter ID cards in Braille, mobile app to educate and motivate disabled voters, and sign language windows in polling booths, it is looking at several other measures to ensure disabled people are not left out of the voting process.

The Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) has decided to re-advertise the post of Punjabi assistant professor in the differently-abled category. The university will also call candidates with disability for all the subjects, once the current recruitments process ends.

 

The decision of the university comes in the wake of the recruitment row as a handicapped candidate appeared in the interview to fill the posts of permanent assistant professor along with others.

New policy for students with special needs in education, exams.

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), along with 28 other education and state boards are all set to bring in new policies for making academics and exams easier for children with special needs.

More than 50 school principals, disabled children and their parents, NGO representatives, activists and special educators participated in a session that was held on Wednesday at New Delhi. They discussed about curriculum adaptations, pedagogies and physical environment needed for children with special needs.

Visually impaired to get their telephone bills for free in UAE.

Etisalat on Sunday announced the launch of a 'Talking Bill' service that enables visually impaired customers to access bill summary details of their account free of charge.

Customers can subscribe to the service at no extra cost by dialing 101 or visiting any of Etisalat's retail stores. Upon successful activation, customers will get an automated call from Etisalat to explain the summary bill details of their account in English or Arabic from next month onwards.

Advocate Abha Singh said the Development Control Regulations and other laws (see box) make it mandatory for public and commercial buildings to be disabled-friendly. The disabilities Act, in fact, empowers civic authorities to deny completion certificates to establishments if they fail to provide such facilities.

"Establishments in Mumbai have been issued completion certificates and are allowed to function despite not having ramps or accessible bathrooms," she said.
