A meeting to create awareness of the importance of technology, parental and career counselling for the visually impaired at the Vidivelli Special School on Karur Bypass Road concluded on Sunday.

“The term assistive technology for the visually impaired is a misnomer, because all technology and gadgets are in essence meant to be of assistance to the user, irrespective of the user’s personal ability,” K. Raghuraman, secretary, Karna Vidya Technology Centre (KVTC), Chennai, said.

Students devise a device for the blind

Students of the YMCA University of Science and Technology have developed an electronic device that will help visually impaired persons track the way without anyone’s help.

 

The students behind the innovation — Karan Handa, Mayank Vashisht, Kushank Arora, Moksh Girdhar and Kushal Sharma — are from the electronics engineering department.

 

They won the second prize for their innovation at a recently concluded technical fest at the Indraprastha Institute of Science and Technology, New Delhi.

Sugamya Pustakalaya, an online library for persons with visual disabilities, was launched by Ravi Shankar Prasad, Minister for Law & Justice and Electronics & Information Technology, at a function organised by the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi. Thaawarchand Gehlot, Minister of Social Justice & Empowerment, presided over the function. 

DIGITAL LIBRARY TO END ‘BOOK FAMINE’ OF VISUALLY CHALLENGED PEOPLE

A first of its kind digitally accessible library, 'Sugamya Pustakalaya', is all set to be launched next week by the Modi Government for the visually challenged or partially sighted people who need books in Braille, accessible e-text or audio format.

Aiming to remove the barriers in literacy and employment, the library is expected to be a major game changer for the blind and low vision people who would have access to the printed word in an accessible format. The books will be available in various vernacular languages besides Hindi and English.

VISUALLY-IMPAIRED PEOPLE HIT STREETS AGAINST GOVT APATHY

Braving incessant rains, hundreds of visually-impaired people on Thursday hit the streets here decrying the State Government’s apathy in fulfiling their 15-point charter of demands. The protestors under the banner of the Odisha Students’ Union of Visually Impaired staged a demonstration at the Lower PMG highlighting their grievances.
