‘500 kids go blind in India every year due to late detection’

Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) can be prevented very easily, but 500 children go blind because of it every year.

November 17 is observed as World Prematurity Day. With advances in neonatal intensive care, the survival rate of premature babies has increased. But unfortunately, the incidence ROP has increased.

Despite all odds, the child survives, but it becomes blind because of poor awareness.

President Ram Nath Kovind will confer the "National Award for Divyangjan, 2017" at a function organized by Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (Divyangjan) under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment on International Day of Persons with Disabilities on 3rd December, 2017 in Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi, stated an official release.
According to the release, Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment, Thaawarchand Gehlot; Minister of States for Social Justice and Empowerment, Krishan Pal Gurjar and Ramdas Athawale will also be present the occasion.

Enzyme that triggers most common form of vision loss identified

Indian-origin researchers have identified an enzyme that serves as a critical trigger for the damaging inflammation that ultimately leads to macular degeneration, the leading cause of vision loss among the elderly.

The finding, published in the journal Nature Medicine, may allow doctors to halt the inflammation early on, potentially saving patients from blindness.

Calcutta: A teenager who sells ghugni with his father at Bally station has helped Bengal secure the second spot in the just-concluded National Para-Swimming Championships in Udaipur, Rajasthan.

Mahadeb Prajapati, 17, was among the 34 participants from Bengal - with varying degrees of visual and orthopaedic disabilities - who won 38 gold, 32 silver and eight bronze medals between themselves. The tally is second only to Maharashtra's.

Every fifth blind person in the world is an Indian. Of the 15 million blind people in India, 1.1 million suffer from corneal blindness. And, 25,000 new cases are added to this backlog annually. A compilation of data from last year shows that only 25,713 transplant procedures were conducted. In order to manage the problem, there is an urgent need to perform 100,000 transplant surgeries every year.

Images used to educate the public about vision loss due to the leading causes of blindness are not fit for purpose, according to a new study from City, University of London.

The researchers found that the image commonly used to represent a condition called (AMD), which affects more than 600,000 people in the UK, did not provide a realistic representation of people's experiences.

New gene-delivery system can stop hereditary blindness, says study

According to a new study, a new gene-delivery system for an inherited form of blindness shows promise. Researchers at Case Western Reserve University have developed gene-carrying nanoparticles that home in on target cells and prevent vision loss in mice with a human form of Leber congenital amaurosis.

The condition is one of the most common causes of blindness in children, according to the National Institutes of Health, affecting two to three of every 100,000 newborns.

There often seems to be a misconception that the only thing blind people do is…be blind.

They don’t just sit at home decked out their blind garb, hovelled up their pyjamas and dropping curry down their shirts.

It is detrimental to their overall identity to assume that if a vision-impaired person says he is going to work, they must be going to the Royal National Institute for the Blind [RNIB] or the Center for the Blind.

People with varying capabilities of sight are able to lead lives that don’t revolve around blindness.

For the last three years, 52-year-old Taradevi from Hansi (in Haryana’s Hisar district) has been suffering from severe visual impairment due to cataracts.

Her husband is physically challenged, so it is her eldest son who takes care of her when he is not working as a milkman. The family lives in a tiny brick hut, with their three cows stationed in the small courtyard outside.
