About 15,000 disabled denied pensions in East Godavari

KAKINADA: With the State government applying the norm of ‘One pension for one family’, thousands of disabled persons are unable to get pensions. Nearly 15,000 disabled have not been able to get pensions since 2014.

The authorities have said that they are unable to do anything in the wake of government policy.

There are 19,388 disabled persons, 22,470 persons with hearing impairment, 35,389 physically challenged, 10,179 blind persons, 13,601 persons with multiple disabilities and 14,000 persons with other disabilities in East Godavari district.

Seeking help for basic financial rights

An old Eyeway client, Birju (name changed) visited the Eyeway Helpdesk office in New Delhi on September 7, 2017. He is a resident of Kaushambi, UP and is 100% blind. Birju has three daughters and a son, and his wife is mentally retarded. He is the sole breadwinner in the family. Birju came to Eyeway seeking help in opening a Kisan Credit Card account with his local bank. The Branch Manager at Bank of Baroda in Nara, Kaushambi refused to open an account for Birju unless it was a joint account.

19 year old Tanishk (name changed) lives in Panipat, Haryana with his mother and sister. Both Tanishk and his sister have low vision. While Tanishk is 80% blind, his sister has 30% vision. Their mother works in an Anganwadi to support the family and ensure that her children get a good education.

Braille keypads to make smartphones accessible to blind

A cab, a meal, a new outfit, bank transactions are just a few screen taps away with smartphones. But navigating the digital world can be slow and cumbersome for a visually-impaired person.

Identifying this problem, entrepreneur and engineer Vijay Raghav Varada has developed a Braille keypad called 'Tipo’ which can be attached to smartphones to improve accessibility.

Vijay has been interested in making devices accessible to the blind since 2014 and it was while working on a project on Braille laptops for keyboards that he learnt of the smartphone problem.

A little care can ensure a safe Deepavali, say doctors

Experts say that celebrating Diwali with care can prevent accidents such as visual impairment, hearing loss, breathing problems among others.

“The spark from fireworks can damage eyelids and eyebrows. The eye may also lose its moisture due to the smoke emitted by crackers,” said Dr Shashidhar, ophthalmologist, Minto Eye Hospital.

He added that an eye specialist should be consulted whenever there is an injury instead of attempting self-medication.

“Children under the age of 15 years should not be allowed to play with crackers that may cause injuries,” he added.

Visually-impaired protesters demand govt jobs

Lahore: Visually-impaired protesters from different parts of the province once again took to the streets on Monday to demand regular jobs and payment of salaries.

A large number gathered in front of the Lahore Press Club (LPC) and shouted slogans against the government. They blocked the main road in front of the LPC and this caused a traffic situation on Davis Road, Durand Road, Empress Road, Egerton Road and adjoining areas.

NGO holds fund-raiser musical evening for visually-impaired

Saksham Punjab, an NGO, dedicated to visually-impaired children, in collaboration with HMV College, organised a fund-raiser musical evening by eminent Sufi singer Hans Raj Hans today.

Deepika Sood, general secretary, of the NGO,said the objective of the programme was to raise funds for the production of accessible digital talking books of under graduation level of Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU), Amritsar.

DEHRADUN TO HOLD NATIONAL BLIND CRICKET TOURNAMENT

Dehradun would host the National Blind Cricket tournament from October 23 to 26. More than 200 players from different parts of the country would participate in the event which is taking place for the first time in the State.

A delegation of the North Zone Blind Cricket Association called upon the Uttarakhand Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat at his residence on Sunday and informed him about the tournament.
