Visually impaired appeal for equal job opportunities

There is need for more advocacy to ensure people with visual impairment are not discriminated in the labour market and social protection programmes for them to avoid begging culture.

The appeal was made at a news conference organised by Rwanda Union of Blind in Kigali, last week.

Dr Patrick Suubi, legal representative of the Union, said employers need to give a chance to visually impaired people to demonstrate their ability.

Reading software to aid blind and visually impaired

Blind and visually-impaired people in the country can now read any printed Nepali characters using Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software, which was launched on Monday.

The software, developed by two IT experts from the Kathmandu University (KU) for the Nepal Netra Joyti Sangh in financial support of the Australian government, was launched by Australian Ambassador to Nepal, Peter Budd, amid a function.

It is the duty of every institution to extend a helping hand to disabled persons, the Supreme Court said on Friday.

The observation by the apex court came while hearing a thalassaemia patient’s plea claiming that she falls under the category of persons with benchmark disability as prescribed under the provisions of the Right of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016.

A bench of Justices Dipak Misra and A M Khanwilkar directed the Chhattisgarh government to constitute a medical board to ascertain whether the petitioner, Sruchi Rathore, would fall under the ambit of the Act.

Engineers open the Internet to all

BENGALURU: While the Internet has become a basic human necessity, the blind and visually impaired have little means to access it. As a way to help such people, a group of engineers from the city have built a device that converts online text into braille.

Called Sparsh, the device uses electro-mechanical technology that reproduces the content of a smartphone or a computer on a rolling display in braille. Powered by a Dynamic Braille Board or dBB, it enables streaming of digital data into its equivalent braille output in real-time.

New Delhi, Aug 11 (IANS) A visually-impaired computer programmer was barred from giving a test for a government-certified programmer when the state-run institute that was conducting it sent him back for not bringing a writer with him.

Originally from West Bengal, the 26-year-old Varun Mehato had gone to give his CCC exam conducted by National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology (NIELIT), an entity under Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.
