India changes definition of blindness

New Delhi, April 19

India has changed its over 40-year-old definition of blindness, bringing it in line with the WHO criteria, a step that would drastically bring down the number of people considered “blind” in the country.

According to the new definition, a person who is unable to count fingers from a distance of three metres would be considered “blind” as against the earlier stipulation of six metres, which was adopted in 1976.

The Amway India in association with the Turnstone Global launched a Braille library for the visually-impaired students at the Bhima Bhoi School for the Blind here on Tuesday.

Fire Services DGP Dr Binoy Behera gracing as chief guest inaugurated the library in presence Secondary Education Deputy Director Snehamayee Senapati, School Principal Sumit Dasgupta and Amway Odisha Cluster Operations Manager Rana Pratap Pradhan.

Court exempts more categories of persons with disabilities

Even as the Centre asserted that respect for the national anthem and flag is “a matter of national pride and non-negotiable”, the Supreme Court questioned the need to expressively define ‘respect’ for the two national symbols when such a feeling of reverence is already inherent in the Constitution. A three-judge Bench of Justices Dipak Misra, A.M. Khanwilkar and M.M. Shantanagoudar modified the court’s November 30, 2016 order, making it compulsory for all to stand up in cinema halls when the national anthem is played.

Supreme Court exempts disable people from standing during national anthem

The Supreme Court on Tuesday exempted the categories of disabled persons from standing during national anthem before screening of a film.

In its earlier order, the apex court had ordered that every person has to stand during the screening of national anthem.

The court also issued notice to the centre on the plea seeking Vande Mataram essential for all educational institution.

The Centre has been given a time period of 4 weeks to revert. The next date of hearing in the matter is on August 23.

He is brilliant, outspoken and handsome. But Joseph Bulugbe, a lawyer, is unhappy not because he not sighted but because of his inability to secure a job five years after bagging a second degree in Law. He says he is tired of life in Nigeria.
Bulugbe graduated with a 2.1 both from University of Lagos (Unilag) in 2009, and University of Aberdeen, Scotland, United Kingdom (UK) in 2012.
