NEW DELHI: Delhi University Vice-Chancellor (V-C) Yogesh Tyagi is showing the light to the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment to empower visually impaired students. The Delhi University in collaboration with te ministry will provide blind-friendly smartphones with new features.

Virender Sehwag’s tweet after Blind World T20 title disappoints India’s captain
The Indian Blind cricket team, who defeated Pakistan in the final of the Blind World T20 tournament, has received plenty of accolades but the Indian captain has been disappointed by Virender Sehwag’s tweet.

HP TO CLEAR BACKLOG OF JOBS FOR VISUALLY IMPAIRED
Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh on Wednesday asked the officials to clear the backlog of jobs for the visually impaired.
Officials said that at present, there is a backlog of 163 jobs kept for the physically challenged. The Chief Minister, who presided over a meeting here, directed the backlog of 65 jobs for the visually impaired should be cleared soon.
The meeting decided to relax some qualification norms, particularly for teaching posts in the state's Education Department, for the physically challenged.

In the present phase of communal frenzy unleashed by religious bigotry, two Muslim brothers at the Institute for Blind performed havan yagna amid recital of vedic mantras and Sanskrit shalokas here today. The management and staff organised the religious prayer meet to mark the Foundation Day celebrations of the institute, which was founded by Mangal Dev, a visually handicapped himself.
Visually impaired voters for equal job opportunities
“Whoever wins and forms the next government should be able to address the important issues of unemployment in Punjab. There should be job opportunities for everyone, including the physically disabled,” said Vikram Singh, a first-time voter and a visually impaired student at the Institute of Blind in the city. About 35 visually impaired voters, four of them being first-timers, cast their votes today using the Punjabi Braille script ballot papers in the city.

Govt launches Braille atlas to let the visually impaired study maps
In a first, the Ministry of Science and Technology has come up with a comprehensive Braille atlas for nearly 50 lakh visually challenged people in the country, especially students.
The atlas has 20 maps on different themes like physical, socio-economic, river system, crops pattern, natural vegetation, cultural, metropolitan areas, roads and railways, and crops.
Informing to empower
The Eyeway helpdesk received a call from the Coordinator at the Enabling Unit of Janaki Devi Memorial College enquiring about the possibility of organizing a training workshop for the visually impaired students enrolled at the college. Our helpline connected her with our network partner - Saksham. The interaction between the Enabling Unit and Saksham culminated in a 2 day training workshop for the VI students. Around 12 students attended and were benefitted from the workshop. They were given training and exposed to making use of freeware like NVDA and other screen reading software.
Challenging ignorance
Hitesh (name changed) resides in Mathura, Uttar Pradesh with his wife and young daughter. His 4 year old daughter was old enough to be enrolled in a nursery school. He was worried that his blindness could prove to be a hindrance in educating her. Since Hitesh often makes queries at the Eyeway helpdesk, he decided to reach out to the Eyeway toll free helpline once again. Our counselor’s assured him that blindness surely could not stop him from ensuring that his daughter gets the best education.
Commitment to change
Mr. Mijaz (name changed) works at a Nationalized bank as a probationary officer and lives in Govindpuri, Delhi. He’d been using the Nokia E5 phone for many years and thought that it might be a good idea to switch to an android phone. He purchased an android phone but was unable to operate or access it. He got in touch with the Eyeway helpdesk enquiring whether there were any training programs that would help him understand smartphone use. Most training programs focus on computer skills and software with mobile usage tutorials mostly on YouTube.

Blind cricket team feted
The Indian blind cricket team, which won the T20 World Cup recently, was felicitated by the Department of Youth Empowerment and Sports, Government of Karnataka, here on Monday.
At a function presided over by Pramod Madhwaraj, Minister of State for Youth Services and Sports, Prakasha Jayaramaiah and R. Sunil, the two cricketers from the State who played a winning hand, were honoured with cash awards of Rs. 7 lakh each. The duo was promised jobs in the State government.

BENGALURU : Viewing a game of cricket for visually impaired can be a real treat, as was seen at the T20 World Cup for the Blind final here on Sunday. The M Chinnaswamy Stadium saw about 15,000 spectators turning up for the clash between India and Pakistan.

India lift second successive Blind T20 World Cup by beating Pakistan
BENGALURU: The Indian blind cricket team successfully defended its Twenty20 World Cup title here today, defeating arch-rivals Pakistan in the final for the second successive edition.
With eight wins from nine matches, India had gone into the final as favourites and lived up to it with a comprehensive victory. For Pakistan though, it was their first loss in the tournament. The two teams had clashed in the 2012 edition final as well with India emerging triumphant.
