94 year old sets record in bowling

Esther Medley of Centralia (U.S.) is legally blind, but when she bowls, she can see a bit of the floor to line up with the lane.

Medley (94) can't see straight ahead, so her 86-year-old husband Ralph tells her which pins are left after her first ball.

That's how Medley recently bowled a score of 244, which included eight strikes. It was the second-highest score of the year for her league.

The Medleys have been playing in the senior league since 1979.

Technology Helps Blind Barrel Racer

Legally blind Brittney Holland can't remember a time when she wasn't barrel racing. At just 15, the Aledo (Texas, U.S.A.) native has already made quite a name for herself.

Barrel racing is a horse riding event in which riders ride in a set pattern around three barrels in a triangular arrangement.

Brittney is placed in the top five of her district, for youth. Not bad considering most of her competitors can see.

Round Table India conducts 9th Blind People Car Rally

The ninth Round Table Blind People car rally was organised jointly by the Round Table India (R.T.I.) and Blind People's Association (B.P.A.) in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.

A feature of this rally was that the route map was given to the participants in Braille just a few minutes before the commencement of the rally. The blind navigators then had to guide the sighted drivers to the destination.

The challenge was to read the route map perfectly and enable the drivers to reach the finish line on time.

Gujarat wins 13th blind cricket tournament

Gujarat won the 13th ‘National Cricket Tournament for the Blind’ defeating Haryana in the finals at the Chinaswamy Stadium in Bangalore on March 5, 2006.

The tournament also became a platform to select best players for the national squad that will play the forthcoming cricket World Cup for the Blind to be held in South Africa in December, 2006.

The five-day tournament saw players in high spirit. In a game where seeing the ball well is considered so important, the cricketers demonstrated the importance of mind over matter.

Sixth world championship for blind sailors <br>to be held in September in Newport, USA

The 2006 IFDS (International Foundation of Disabled Sailors) Blind Sailing World Championship will be held from September 20 to 27, 2006 in Newport, Rhode Island,hosted by the New York Yacht Club (NYYC) with the assistance of Sail Newport. More than a dozen nations are expected to send teams for the championship.

Eighth blind chess tournament held at Sangli

The eighth National ‘A’ Chess Championship for blind people was held at Sangli from Febuary 20 to 27 2006.

All India Chess Federation for the Blind, organisers of the tournament said: the tournament was played on round robin basis, with two rounds played every day according to FIDE and International Braille Chess Association rules.

In addition to the top ranking players, competitors included the top 16 men and eight women from the National ‘B’ tournament.

Alison Gunn- Ruling the water waves

Blind sailor Alison Gunn successfully completed her solo voyage around the Isle of Wight (U.K.). Alison, 39, undertook her challenge on a 17 feet trimaran to raise money for Lymington Sailability, a U.K. based voluntary organisation that gives disabled people the chance to sail. Her husband Keith and friends were in a support boat to guide and encourage her.

This is for the first time that a state's cricket team of visually impaired players is going abroad to play a one-day series.

Before leaving for Pakistan, the captain of the Punjab team Gurpreet Singh Machhiwara said that all members of his team are very confident of winning the series, “We will do our best to beat them.''

The team members include: Parminder Singh, Gurbir Singh Dehlon, Salinder Singh, Sandeep Kumar Trivedi, Gurpreet Singh Machhiwara, Balwinder Singh, Rajinder Singh Cheema, Murari Lal, Satinder Kumar, Harjinder Singh and Manwinder Singh.
