SINGAPORE — She was only nine when she became blind in her right eye due to glaucoma. Three years ago, following a fainting episode in class, Amanda Chong woke up to a totally dark world, having lost sight in her left eye as well.

The Odisha Government seems to have no concern towards betterment of around 13 lakh disabled people in the State as it is reportedly mulling to fill up the vacant post of the Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), which is lying vacant for around a week now, by rehabilitating a political person instead of an expert in the field.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Wednesday distributed free laptop computers to visually impaired students at a function organised in his home office Krishna in Bengaluru. This move by the government is aimed at encouraging visually impaired students to pursue higher education and making them self-sufficient. With this, the government has fulfilled its promise of distributing laptops to 1,000 students from Class 10 and above as announced in the budget. 

A Braille book on disaster management to educate visually challenged students on protecting themselves during natural calamity was released here on Monday.

This new app can help the visually challenged type quickly and efficiently on an iPad. Created by Stanford engineer Sohan Dharmaraja, the app named IBrailler Notes uses eight keys. What’s different about it is that the keys form around the fingertips when they’re placed on the screen. Which means that if a user loses his way, he simply lifts his fingers from the screen and places them down again.
