A risky road for blind students in Rohini

Students at the All India Confederation of Blinds in Rohini often get knocked by cars while finding their way to the school premises. Drivers backing without warning or looking around had left three of the girls bruised earlier. The students have a tough time weaving through the vehicles parked haphazardly.
A slip road between Rajeev Gandhi Cancer Hospital, on Bhagwan Mahavir Marg, and a zonal office of North Corporation leads to the school.

As the protest by gazetted probationers of the KPSC 2011 batch intensified on Saturday, 32-year-old Kempahonnaiah showed no signs of fatigue.

Selected on his second attempt at the exam, the visually-impaired candidate was to become a tahsildar. But the Cabinet decision put paid to that dream. “I wanted to set an example to other blind people that they can also achieve success in life,” said a dejected Kempahonnaiah.

Krish's Dream Fulfilled

Director Krish Joshi of Parapancha is elated as he has managed to bring Ravindra Jain, music composer, lyricist and a playback singer, to Sandalwood.

Jain, who was born visually impaired, started of his career in the early 70s.
After Raj Kapoor gave him his first break, he went on to compose tunes for Ram Teri Ganga Maili and a couple of other films directed by Rajkapoor's son Randhir Kapoor.

Jain has rendered music to many films under Rajshri Productions' for almost a decade.

No need of eyes for judging everything: Visually impaired Umaria collector

Newly-appointed Umaria District Collector Krishna Gopal Tiwari, who is visually impaired, says one does not need eyes to judge everything.

For the first time in Madhya Pradesh, a visually impaired Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer has been posted by the state government as collector of a district.

Tactile tiles of little use to visually-impaired

Tactile tiles, which are virtually the guiding lights for the visually-impaired, are hardly of any use to them in the Capital. Sometimes they end up leading into drains, as outside the power station adjoining Delhi Secretariat; at other places they lead into obstacles like trees, poles or even a wall. This is so because while placing them is mandated under the civic and building guidelines, the sensitivity needed for such work is missing.

US Gateway unveils app for the visually impaired passengers

San Francisco International Airport has unveiled a prototype version of a smartphone app, which can help visually-impaired passengers to navigate through an airport terminal.
 
The app was developed through San Francisco Mayor, Ed Lee’s, Entrepreneur-in-Residence Programme, which paired the Californian gateway with Indoo.rs, an indoor navigation technology firm, and was developed in the space of 16 weeks.

The blind photographer

Brenden Borrellini was born completely deaf and with limited sight that developed into complete blindness. His disability presented many obstacles for him growing up but with a lot of hard work and help from the Special Education Unit at the Cavendish Road State School in Brisbane, he became the first deaf and blind student to finish his high school education and to attend University.
 
In 1989 he was nationally recognised and won the young Australian of the Year award for his academic achievements. But Brenden didn't stop there.

Brother and sister killed by Metra train in Chicago

A brother and his sister in their 50’s were struck near the Western Ave Station around 5 p.m. by a train heading inbound from LaGrange.

Witnesses on the scene identify the victims as Margaret Hudson and her brother. They say the siblings were were pushing a cart on the tracks looking for metal scraps.   Margaret was her brother’s caretaker. He was partially blind.

Friends and family say Margaret and her brother were up there often.

Trains were stopped and major delays were reported by Metra throughout the evening rush hour.

SPECIAL EDUCATORS FOR UNAIDED PVT SCHOOLS

After facing the ire of the Delhi High Court, the Directorate of Education (DoE) on Monday issued a notice to all unaided private schools of Delhi to recruit special educators and make their schools premises barrier-free so as to provide movement and access to the children with disabilities. The notice has been issued by the directorate following a mandate by the High Court asking for a compliance report at the earliest.
