An attempt to revive oral art forms

The Story Arts Festival, Hyderabad, an initiative by Story Arts India that was formed this year – an organisation that wants to keep alive and also promote oral tradition, an integral part of many Indian cultures,  along with Nivashi Publishers was held on July 13 and 14.

Itwas an event that was celebrated with fun and frolic for children aged between 9-15.

Though she and her 70-year-old brother, Vispi, take turns to go online on alternate days, excitement welled up when she heard familiar voices on Friday night. They were on the "net", a ritual every active HAM follows every night.

Blind rape victim travels 45kms to file complaint

A blind woman arrived at the district police headquarters on Saturday and met SP Sonia Singh with a complaint that policemen in her village refused to register her complaint that her husband's friend had raped her on July 3. 

The woman had approached Bisalpur Kotwali police station. Her village, Nabadia Shivpuria of Pilibhit district, fell under its jurisdiction. She found, however, that the police, instead of registering her complaint, only reproved her.

Jaitley announces new schemes for disabled

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley Thursday announced some new schemes for disabled people.
Tabling the union budget 2014-15 in parliament,
 
Jaitley said: "Fifteen new Braille presses will be established and 10 existing ones will be revived."

Jaitley said the scheme to assist the disabled to purchase aids and appliances will be extended.

"I propose to extend the scheme for assistance to disabled persons for purchase of aids and appliances (ADIP) to include contemporary aids and assistive devices," he said.

A leading activist for the deafblind in the country, 38-year-old Zamir is best known for training the likes of Amitabh Bachchan and Rani Mukherjee Chopra in tactile sign language for the acclaimed movie ‘Black’.

Blindness is treatable, says expert

This partnership may help alleviate the main contributor to disabilities in South Africa - blindness. About 80% of the visually impaired population live in rural areas, according to stats from the SA National Council for the Blind.
Fact: 80% of blindness and visual impairment is treatable, according to Professor Colin Cook, head of the University of Cape Town's division of ophthalmology.
Avoidable blindness will now be tackled by the university following their new partnership with the Commonwealth Eye Health Consortium.
