‘Violation’ of rights of disabled students: Umang Foundation to challenge Himachal board, CBSE rules

The Umang Foundation will challenge the rules of the Himachal Pradesh Board of School Education, Central Board of School Education (CBSE) and state and national open schools, which violate the rights of disabled students, in the high court.
Expert member of the State Disability Advisory Board, chairman of Umang Foundation and nodal officer for Disability Affairs of the Himachal Pradesh University (HPU), Shimla, Prof Ajay Srivastava said that the rules of these educational bodies do not conform with the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act 2016.

IBSA was founded in 1986 and has since emerged as the premier national blind sports body in the country with over 247 affiliates in 27 States. It is the sole Indian Affiliate of the International Blind Sports Federation, the apex sports organization for blind sports in the world.  It is also affiliated with the Paralympic Committee of India (PCI).

The clip has obviously gone viral online and netizens are absolutely loving it.

PU, PGIMER faculty get patent for oral healthcare education device for visually-impaired

The device, created by PU, PGIMER facult members, comprises a dental model having diseased and healthy teeth, inflamed and healthy gingival tissues and a sensor.
Panjab University’s representatives on Thursday said the University Institute of Engineering and Technology (UIET) and Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) professors have been granted a patent for an oral healthcare educational device for the visually impaired children.

KOTA: A Government Public Divisional Library (GPDL) of Kota has taken a unique initiative of facilitating voice donations from people for helping visually impaired students and senior citizens read books in audio.
GPDL has prepared a database of over 1000 voice donors, including library readers, voice-over artists, and theater artists. Other 40 voice donors have already donated their total 120 voice recordings for helping the visually impaired and senior citizens read books.

Students like Akshita (19) are among the beneficiary of the voice donation facility of the GPDL.

DC Impact: HC takes up plight of visually impaired kids

The HC committee for suo motu petitions took the report to the notice of Chief Justice Sharma who directed converting it as a petition.
Hyderabad: The Telangana High Court took up a Deccan Chronicle report on the deplorable conditions of the two government-run schools for visually impaired children in the city as a suo motu writ petition and appointed senior counsel L. Ravichander as amicus curiae to assist the court as it dealt with the issue.

A helping hand

Thirty-year-old Thrijay Kumar was born sighted to a middle-class family in Vishakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. But he slowly began to lose his eye sight due to a condition called Stargardt Macular Degeneration. His father works in a travel agency and his elder brother has a corporate job with a leading MNC. Fortunately, his family was supportive and encouraged him to enroll in a mainstream school, with special attention from teachers.

Securing an independent future

Thirty-year-old Naresh was born blind to a low-income family in Andhra Pradesh. Illiterate themselves, both his parents were keen on educating their son, despite the lack of awareness on raising a child with vision impairment. On a relative’s suggestion, Naresh was enrolled in a special school for the blind, where he studied till Class X. He was then admitted in a regular institution, following which he completed his Bachelors degree. At present, Naresh is pursuing his Masters in Literature.

The fourth edition of Divya Kaushal, a ‘National Job Fair and HR Conclave’, organised exclusively for Divyangjan or People with Disabilities (PwD) by Saksham Tamil Nadu and Inclusive Divyangjan Entrepreneur Association (IDEA) India was conducted here on Wednesday.
The two-day flagship event was organised for the first time in south India and in a tier two city providing a platform to the aspiring differently abled to connect with potential employers. The event was supported by The Hans Foundation and Rural India Support Trust, USA.
