The Kashmir chapter of the National Federation of the Blind, in collaboration with the Dagger Division of the Army, has opened a school for the education of visually-impaired children at Deewanbagh in Baramulla district.
Blind students studying at the University of Pune and its affiliated colleges in the district have reason to cheer.
In order to increase their pace of learning and enhance their academic potential, the Pune University Blind Student Learning Centre which functions under the Department of Education and Extensive Education, has decided to distribute special MP3 players to its students.
Some of the devices have already been handed out and the results have been encouraging.
A bill was passed in the Rajya Sabha today to widen the beneficiary net for disabled children in Right to Education and provide those with severe disability the option of receiving education at home.
Moving the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education (Amendment) Bill, 2010, for consideration, HRD Minister Kapil Sibal said it provides the right to receive home-based education to children with severe disabilities and dismissed criticism of the provision.
This amendment adds children with disability to the definition of “disadvantaged groups” and will now be a part of the 25 per cent reservation for the Economically Weaker Section category, under the Right to Education Act.
The bill has given special benefit to children suffering from autism, mental retardation, cerebral palsy and multiple disabilities of choosing to study from home.
The Ahmedabad University (AU) has granted affiliation to a college of physiotherapy for visually impaired in Ahmedabad.
According to authorities at Ahmedabad University (AU), the three and a half year diploma course on physiotherapy at the newly-affiliated college will be taken over by the varsity from the new academic year.� BM Shah, registrar of the varsity, said that a batch of 15 students will be taken in the college as the term begins from this June.

A PARTIALLY-sighted York man has finally got a job after being out-of-work for 12 months – now he is pleading for other people with sight problems to be given the same chance.
Steve Butler, 34, of Tang Hall, had been finding that sight loss was a major barrier to employment, despite having a number of administration qualifications and working in voluntary positions.
He said he was losing his confidence, fearing every time an employer realised he was visually impaired, they would find a reason not to interview him.
Parliament passed the Right of Children to Free and compulsory Education (Amendment) Bill, 2012, with the Lok Sabha passing the measure on Wednesday, thereby providing for an integrated education process which would allow differently-abled children in the age group 6-14 the right of admission to any school.
