Ram Kumar was in Class 6 when his eyesight began to deteriorate. Without realizing that this would be an ongoing process, he continued to study until it became difficult for him to move around and read on his own. By Class 8, Ram had stopped going to school, assuming that visually impaired people could not study. With no information on how to live life with blindness, Ram spent the next two years undergoing treatment. His parents were supportive and rushed to every possible eye specialist to restore their son’s eyesight, yielding no results.

Exploring new opportunities

Resident of Indore, Madhya Pradesh, 29-year-old Rajesh Arya studied in a mainstream school and college.  Despite being 75% visually impaired, he did not avail of any government provisions like scribe or used screen reading software due to lack of awareness. This made his growing up years difficult.

Raising aspirations

Blind and visually impaired people in our country are left to depend on their families for every decision about their lives. The result of which is often neglect and uncertain future. Budhaji Niguda, 28-year-old visually impaired person from Thane district of Maharashtra has been a victim of such neglect by his family.

Guiding on to the right path

Jayamala was only eight years old when she lost her eyesight due to untimely treatment. For the next decade, the young girl stayed within the safe walls of her home. Her family who sustained through a small business had no idea what to do with Jayamala. It was only when one of their relatives apprised them about an organization working for disabled persons that she stepped outside for the first time.

App to help ease accessibility issues differently abled face in buildings, transport system

The ministry of social justice and empowerment is set to launch a mobile application which will allow the differently abled, elderly and even Covid-19 patients to lodge accessibility-related problems in buildings or transport infrastructure by simply clicking and uploading pictures from their mobile phones.

HC tells DU to declare PG results by month-end

The High Court on Monday directed Delhi University to declare results of all postgraduate courses by October 31 and to upload the marksheets on its website.

The court also directed the university to ensure that students are not required to go to a college to physically collect the marksheets.

The Bench also fixed various deadlines between October 20 and 31 for declaration of results of undergraduate courses, with a buffer of maximum three days from the date fixed.

Noida NGO helps 100 visually impaired students learn through online classes

Noida:

As schools remain closed due to the Covid lockdown, learning has become a difficult task for students, especially for visually impaired students. To overcome this problem, a Noida-based NGO is helping more than 100 visually impaired students continue the learning process through online classes.
 

The NGO – Saksham Resource Centre – has also provided laptops and mobile phones to students to enable them to join online classes from home.

Hope in Sight: Capturing happiness

Commemorating October as the Blindness Awareness Month, the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness announced a photo contest on its website in line with this year’s theme of #HopeInSight. Photographers around the globe sent in their entries to raise awareness about eye health.

Discovering Hands project by Enable India

Discovering Hands is a project from Germany and an initiative of Dr. Frank Hoffman, a senior Gynaecologist in Germany. They have been training blind women for last 10 years to detect the early signs of breast cancer. The visually impaired women with their highly sensitized touch and tactile sense are trained to detect the smallest lumps of breast cancer thereby preventing it at early stages by doing physical examination of breasts. Therefore they are designated as Medical Tactile Examiners (MTEs).

Nagaland marks World Sight Day with free eye check up

Marking the World Sight Day, the eye care practitioners (Ophthalmologists, Optometrists and Ophthalmic Assistants) of Nagaland today conducted free eye check up in various clinics in Kohima and Dimapur.

This eye check-up aims to stress on the importance of eye health and to give quality eye care to the people of Nagaland.

Kezhangulie Mepfhü-o, Eye Optics, Kohima said World Sight Day is celebrated on the second Thursday of October every year.

It aims to spread awareness about blindness and visual impairment.

The latest episode of Kaun Banega Crorepati 12 starts with previous day's roll-over contestant Asmita Madhav Gore. The 22-year-old contestant, who came on the show to support her family, was accompanied by her visually-impaired father. Asmita played the game quite well and with the help of four lifelines she was able to reach till Rs 25 lakh question. However, as the young girl was not sure about the answer and had also exhausted all the lifelines, she decided to quit  the show.

Bombay HC asks NCERT to verify credentials of experts before enlisting help for special education

The Bombay high court (HC) has asked the ministry of education and the National Council for Education, Research and Training (NCERT) to verify the credentials of the experts listed by the petitioner for finding a way to provide education for specially-abled children in over 900 special schools across the state.
