Hyderabad Mint to release visually impaired-friendly Rs. 20 coins soon

India Government Mint, Hyderabad (IGMH), is currently minting 2019 series visually challenged-friendly coins and will soon release Rs. 20 coins.

In a statement on Sunday, Jyoti Prakash Dash, chief general manager of IGMH said the mint rededicates itself on the foundation day to serve the nation with a wide range of products and services. He said since 2000, India stopped importing the coins from 10 foreign countries, including the UK and South Korea and, “now IGMH is in a position to export coins with latest security features.”

The Milwaukee County Transit System (MCTS) has announced a new pilot program that visually-impaired riders say has potential to change lives.

On Wednesday, MCTS announced that Milwaukee will become the third city in the nation, behind New York and Boston, to have a transit system that has partnered with the app ‘Aira.’

The app connects users with professionals using their smartphone cameras, allowing those professionals to provide real-time assistance to blind and visually-impaired riders.

The Central Scientific Instruments Organisation (CSIO) today transferred the technology for the manufacture of ‘Divya Nayan’ a personal reader for the visually impaired, to the Central Electronics Limited (CEL), a government enterprise under the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, for commercial production and marketing.

QR codes and postal ballots: Voting made easy and inclusive

New Delhi: From postal ballots to QR code-enabled voter slips, the polling for the Delhi assembly elections Saturday had many firsts to its credit.

Delhi became the first state to experiment with postal ballots, so that voting more convenient for those with severe disabilities or above the age of 80 years.

Ameerullah Siddiqui, a voter from Okhla constituency, who has an orthopaedic impairment, said the ballot paper was sent to him about seven days in advance by the returning officer. He cast his vote and sent it back the same day.

First time in Nagaland, Blind Football demo/training camp on Feb 15 & 16

DIMAPUR, FEBRUARY 10 (MExN): For the first time in Nagaland, a Blind Football Demo/Training Camp will be conducted at the Don Bosco Higher Secondary School Ground, Riverbelt Colony, Dimapur on February 15 and 16.

13-year-old motivational speaker passes away

Thirteen-year-old visually impaired Prerna Sharma, who was a motivational speaker, died at the PGIMER here today. She was suffering from jaundice.

An inspiration for students of the City Beautiful, she was honoured with ‘Outstanding Creative Child with Disabilities’ by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.

Last year, Prerna Sharma, who was a student of Government Model Senior Secondary School, Dhanas, was awarded a commendation certificate during the Republic Day function in Chandigarh.

Aurangabad man becomes first visually-impaired Indian to finish Ironman race

Defying all odds, a man from Aurangabad scripted history by becoming the first visually-impaired Indian to finish an Ironman triathlon in Dubai that involved swimming, bicycling and running.

Niket Dalal, 38, achieved the feat with the help of his sighted ally, Arham Shaikh, 27. The Ironman 70.3 consists of a 1.9km swim, 90km bicycle ride and 21.1km marathon that needs to be wrapped up under 8 hours without taking a break.
