NTPC distributes desktop computers at Blind School

As part of promoting computer skill training among young and specially challenged, NTPC Coal Mining Headquarters, Ranchi  under its CSR initiative in association with Swayamsiddha Ladies Club distributed two no.s of desktop computers to St Michael Blind school, residential school for specially challenged children with visual impairment.

On this occasion, Smt Rekha Jain,President ,NTPC Swayamsiddha Ladies handed over the desktop computers to Principal, Smt. Sarita Talal,Principal in the presence of committee members of the ladies club.

Visually Impaired plead for nationwide validity of UDID cards

FEROZEPUR: Like every citizen of the country has a unique Aadhar card ID, on the same lines, the department of empowerment of persons with disabilities of the ministry of social justice and impowerment has also provided a unique ID for the disabled. The UDID card is recognized as a proof  of disability by the government of India. This means that PwDs can use their UDID card to access various government schemes and benefits such as financial assistance, healthcare services, education, and employment.

Importance of self-reliance

Thirty-three-year-old Inder Singh Bahera is a resident of Uttar Pradesh. As a person with 100% blindness, Inder never really explored ways of self-reliance. He was dependent on the money he received in the form of disability pension to meet his daily needs.
When he didn’t receive the pension in his bank account for three consecutive months, he was left in a dire state. He reached out to the Eyeway Helpdesk to report the issue and seek some resolution. His case was forwarded to our Advocacy Officer who contacted the Social Welfare Officer in his state.

Ferozepur, July 14, 2024: On Sunday,  the meeting of Progressive Federation for the Blind, Punjab Unit was held at Home for the Blind, Makhu Gate, Ferozepur City to plan to start a Braille Book Bank and celebrate World Disability Day.

Days after his daughter IAS probationary officer Puja Khedkar, who is facing an investigation for misuse of power and violation of rules of appointment, her father retired bureaucrat Dilip Khedkar spoke up in her defence. Khedkar, who retired from Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB), in 2020, claimed his daughter was a victim of a conspiracy being hatched to target his family by “someone”.

Ruhin Bhattasali, a visually impaired  girl from Hyderabad, has secured admission to IIT  Hyderabad's Computer Science Engineering program,  marking a significant achievement in her academic  journey.
From a young age, Ruhin's ambition to  excel in academics was apparent. Recognizing her potential,   her parents and teachers provided the necessary support and   encouragement.

Bengal gets its 1st Braille Constitution

Kolkata: In a first in Bengal, the West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences (WBNUJS) published a Braille version of the Constitution of India, said Vice-Chancellor, Nirmal Kanti Chakrabarti.
The Braille Constitution will empower the  visually-impaired students,”Chakrabarti added.
PhD scholar at WBNUJS, Arnab Roy, who is part of the initiative, said they would also convert other reading materials to benefit such students.

IIIT Allahabad develops AI tool for blind, visually impaired to access chart images

The paper “Alt4Blind: A User Interface to Simplify Charts Alt-Text Creation” related to this creation has been accepted.

Experts from the Indian Institute of Information Technology-Allahabad (IIIT-A), Prayagraj, in collaboration with their counterparts at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Germany, have developed a tool for blind and visually impaired persons capable of creating and accessing chart images.

New Training Program for Visually Impaired Women Cricketers Launched in Delhi

On Tuesday, a new training program for visually impaired women and girls was launched in Delhi. This initiative, called ‘Training in Blind Cricket for Visually Impaired Girls and Women in Delhi,’ is a collaboration between the Samarthanam Trust for the Disabled, Cricket Association for the Blind in India (CABI), and Cricket Association for the Blind in Delhi (CABD). The program aims to train 50 visually impaired girls and women in cricket over three months.

The judgment underscored the detrimental impact of stereotypes on discrimination and the enjoyment of fundamental rights.

The Supreme Court, in a landmark ruling on Monday, laid down comprehensive guidelines to prevent stereotyping and discrimination of persons with disabilities (PwDs) in visual media, including films and documentaries, emphasising the importance of sensitive and accurate representation of PwDs in order for discourse to be inclusive rather than alienating.

Preparing for employment opportunities

Twenty-two-year-old Jeel Kakkad was born to a middle income family in Mumbai, Maharashtra. At an early age, Jeel was diagnosed with a degenerative eye condition called Retinitis Pigmentosa. She had some limitations as a person with low vision, but she was sent to a regular school. Pune-based Niwant Andh Mukta Vikasalay and  National Association for the Blind (NAB) have embarked on a   transformative initiative that trains them in the use of a  self-writing app, called SwaLekhan, a game-changer for 50  students in the state so far.
