Disability groups applaud the SC ruling declaring accessibility a fundamental right

NEW DELHI: Disability rights advocates and groups have described the Supreme Court judgment recognizing accessibility as a fundamental right for persons with disabilities as historic and hugely transformational.
The ruling is set to transform public life across India, compelling both state and central governments to prioritize the rights of disabled individuals, said the National Disability Network, an umbrella body representing 40 members from across India.

Up accessibility for persons with disabilities: Panel chief

State Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities Madhvi Kataria today held a review meeting with the Department of Urban Planning to assess the current status of public buildings under the Sugamya Bharat Abhiyan (Accessible India Campaign) and explore further measures to make Chandigarh a more inclusive city for persons with disabilities (PwDs).

The meeting focused on ensuring compliance with the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016, which mandates standards for accessibility in physical environments, transportation and communication systems.

Vision for the visually-impaired

Since its launch in 2022–23, Project Drishti, an initiative by RC Indore Uptown, RID 3040, has screened 726 visually-impaired children. Of these, 28 children were identified for corrective surgeries. “We have successfully completed 21 surgeries, enabling the children to regain their vision. We are also working on corneal transplants for seven more children,” says PDG Sanjeev Gupta, a club member. In addition, six children received spectacles, and 15 were given low-vision devices.
