How one woman chose to be the eyes of visually impaired children

Vanessa Bahati’s last born son was born with visual impairment. After visiting several hospitals in Europe and locally, the results were negative. The reality that her son would never be able to see propelled her to begin her charity organisation ‘Jordan Foundation’ which was named after her son.

The foundation is now home to other visually impaired children. The mother of four had a chat with Women Today’s Sharon Kantengwa on how the organisation has changed the lives of visually impaired children.

Unique visit for visually impaired children

A group of students of the Nalgonda School for the Blind called on President Ram Nath Kovind at the Rashtrapati Bhavan on Tuesday, celebrating Children’s Day with other participating schools and institutions.

Sharing the experience of the meeting, General Secretary of the Development & Welfare Association of the Blind (DWAB) P. Chokka Rao said the event was a significant one, and it encouraged the students.

Blind people call for secret voting rights

Visually-impaired people have urged the Election Commission (EC) to make necessary arrangements so that they can have the secret voting right.

At an interaction on election of the House of Representatives and provincial assemblies at Dhulikhel on Tuesday, the visually impaired also drew the EC’s notice to the lack of voter education programmes for the people with disabilities.

Children’s Eye Care Week at LVPEI

An awareness campaign about Amblyopia (lazy eyes) and squint (crossed eyes) was taken up by L.V. Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI) on the occasion of Children’s Day and as part of Children’s Eye Care Week on Tuesday.

Amblyopia is a vision development disorder among children in which an eye fails to achieve normal vision even with full prescription glasses or contact lens. In most cases, only one eye is affected but if left untreated, it can cause severe visual disability in the affected eye.
 

Assam to provide free textbooks to blind students

The Assam Government will provide free textbooks to visually impaired students of the State, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said on Tuesday.

The Chief Minister made the announcement while releasing a guidebook for the visually challenged students for competitive examinations.

Mr. Sonowal said his government has taken up various programmes aimed at uplifting the lives of the 4.4 lakh ’dibyangs’ (differently abled) in Assam.

Reservation for disabled increased to 5%

A Panjab University committee has approved the enhancement of reservation to persons with disability from 3 per cent to 5 per cent. It will be implemented from the 2018-19 session and has been done to comply with the provisions of the Persons with Disabilities Act.

The implementation of the 5 per cent quota will result in a reduction in the general category seats from 55.5 per cent to 53.5 per cent.

FIRST BLIND OAS OFFICER JOINS PURI DM OFFICE

Sanyasa Kumar Behera, the first visually-challenged OAS officer, assumed office as the Training Reserve Officer at the Establishment section of the Collectorate here on Wednesday.

Behera, who is 100 per cent visually challenged from birth, is now doing entire office work through Braille script. Before joining, he had undergone four-month training at the Gopabandhu Academy of Administration in Sambalpur.

I am blind so is love, get over it": Nidhi Goyal, India’s first disabled woman comedian

Nidhi Goyal is a visually impaired stand-up comedian, making her mark in an industry dominated by men.

Nidhi wasn’t born blind.

At the age of 14, she was diagnosed with an incurable, irreversible eye disorder (retinitis pigmentosa) that eventually robbed her of her sight.

She learned that many people have various preconceived notions about disabled persons.

In cases like these, Nidhi would either call the person out or make a joke. It was on such an occasion that her friend and stand-up comedian Pramada Menon, asked Nidhi, “Why don’t you do comedy?”
