CHENNAI: Humdreds of members belonging to Persons With Disabilities staged a daylong protest in the premises of Ezhilagam, the building that hosts offices of several top government officials. They braved odds in continuing their protest throughout the day to have their demands heard, most importantly the demand to reduce the minimum degree of disability to 40 per cent to avail of concessions.

The absence of provisions for persons with disabilities (PwD) makes it tough for them to access suburban railway stations. Except for a few railway stations like Egmore, most stations in the city and its neighbourhood lack ramps and signboards. The absence of special counters and queues for PwD only adds to their troubles.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: With barely two months left for the academic year to close, the visually challenged school students in the state are yet to get most books, especially the the second term (part 2) of classes I to VIII.Only a few schools got part 2 books of classes  II, III, VI and VIII, the syllabus of which changed this year.

Boston: MIT scientists, including those of Indian-origin, have developed a wearable device, consisting of a 3D camera that could be a virtual 'guide dog' for visually impaired people navigating in real environments.  

The city has close to 1,000 parks, but only three are disabled-friendly. Ten years after throwing its gates open to what was hailed as India’s first inclusive public play space — Coles Park — the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) cannot brag about having too many of these.

Social Justice and Empowerment, Shri Thaawarchand Gehlot launched an exclusive job portal for Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) here today. The PwDs can avail the different facilities such as self employment loan, education loan, skill training, link to scholarships and information about jobs in a single window platform through this National Job Portal.

Round Table India, a social organisation, will organise a Blind Man Car Rally here on Sunday. The rally would start from College Road (Lingraj College) and culminate after covering a distance of about 30 km to 40 km, while discovering several places around the city.
