Living with a disability is not easy in a country where a large section of the population still looks at it as an outcome of bad karma. And being a person with disability born to a poor household makes it harder. Now imagine a blind girl from a low income family, the stigma scales greater heights.
 
The Eyeway Helpdesk receives fewer calls from women with blindness as they are doubly marginalized in the largely patriarchal Indian society. This story recounts the struggles of two visually impaired girls from Maharashtra, both aspiring for financial independence.

Ahmedabad: In an important order on the educational  qualifications of scribes for fully or partially blind candidates in recruitment exams, the Gujarat high court made it clear that the scribe’s qualification must be aligned with the candidate’s qualifications and not with the minimum criteria prescribed  for the exams.

Taking baby steps towards independent living

Thirty-five-year-old Zainab Arif was born with an eye condition called Retinitis Pigmentosa. In her early years, she had partial vision, but gradually she experienced further sight loss. At present, she only has some light perception left. Growing up in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, Zainab went to a regular school. But due to deteriorating eyesight, she couldn’t study after Class 8. Her family lacked awareness about life with blindness and ways of educating a person with vision impairment.

A final-year iMTech student at IIIT-B, has accomplished a remarkable feat by obtaining a patent for a device that can help visually impaired students. The student, Mayank Kabra, has titled his innovation ‘System and Method for Assisting Visually Impaired Individuals.’

Visually-impaired students provided audio question papers in SSC exams

Principal Secretary, School Education, Praveen Prakash on March 19 (Tuesday) said that for the first time in the country, Andhra Pradesh provided audio question papers to the visually-impaired students appearing for the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examinations that started on March 18 (Monday).
n a statement, he said this year, 12 children with special needs are using the facility and it would be extended to all such children in the future.

Disability Pension Woes

There are around 60 million blind and visually impaired people living in India. A majority of this population remains ignorant, with limited or no access to opportunities of education and employment. This also means they remain financially dependent on family and close community.
The government of India offers a monthly Disability Pension to support their basic needs. This pension scheme is implemented through central as well as the state government. Depending on the disability population size of a particular state, the amount allocated by the state and central bodies varies.
