Aspiring to new heights

Umar Bandari lives in Srinagar, Jammu & Kashmir. He and two of his siblings are visually impaired. After losing his mother at an early age, he learned to take care of household chores as his father was busy working around the clock to feed the family.
Despite the vision problems, Umar prioritized his studies and worked hard in pursuing his bachelor’s and master’s degree from Kashmir University.  When he enrolled for a B.Ed. program, his vision deteriorated further, making reading a daunting task to undertake independently.

When I was about 30 years old, I started having problems with my vision. I was born perfectly sighted, but over the course of my adulthood, my vision deteriorated to the point where I couldn’t read anything. My family and friends, of course, wanted to help me with my everyday tasks — and for a while, they had to do that. But I wanted to gain my independence back and feel more confident in my abilities. As a computer engineer, I felt like I could create a solution that could not only help me but help others in my situation.

As part of the mental health awareness month, CPB Learning Lab in collaboration with the Museum of Possibilities is offering a free visual storytelling workshop for people with disabilities called 'Hey!'. 

Focusing on the creative abilities, through this workshop, we will all express ourselves via the medium of photography, storytelling, and simple and fun photography based activities and interactions.
