The Supreme Court came down heavily on the Union government over its failure to comply with the July 2024 orders of the Court, directing appointment of a visually-impaired person and other candidates with disability, who had cleared the civil services examination in 2008.
The Bench of Justice Abhay S Oka and Justice Augustine George Masih issued a contempt of court notice to the Secretary of Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT), asking him to reply as to why contempt proceedings should not be initiated against the Department.

She studied in Jodhpur and completed Class 12 while staying at the Netraheen Vikas Sansthan Blind Hostel. NEW DELHI: Disability rights advocates and groups have described the Supreme Court judgment recognizing accessibility as a fundamental right for persons with disabilities as historic and hugely transformational.
The ruling is set to transform public life across India, compelling both state and central governments to prioritize the rights of disabled individuals, said the National Disability Network, an umbrella body representing 40 members from across India.
Blindness will not come in the way of educationally qualified candidates discharging the duties of a primary school teacher, the Karnataka High Court recently said while directing the State government to consider the application of a visually challenged candidate for the post of social studies teacher.

It also invites people to mobilize support for the dignity, rights, and well-being of persons with disabilities. Forty-nine-year-old Ashok Patil was born sighted in a village in Raigad district of Maharashtra. His father worked at Hindustan Chemical Limited, and his mother was a homemaker. After completing 10th grade in a mainstream school, Ashok enrolled in a chemical diploma program. However, during his second year, his vision began to fail, and by the age of 18, he lost complete sight due to Retinitis Pigmentosa, a degenerative eye condition.
