'Disabled children need greater access to books’

Vidya Sagar, an organisation that works with people with disabilities, hosted a panel discussion with authors and publishers who have written and published books on children with disabilities, at the Madras School of Economics on Saturday.

“There are very few books that can be accessed by children with disabilities,” said Rajul Padmanabhan, director, Vidyasagar. “It is important to include them in the school syllabus,” she said.

OVER 50,000 KIDS RUN IN SALWAN MARATHON

Over 52000 schoolchildren from all across the country lined up to take part in the Salwan Marathon held on Sunday in New Delhi. The annual run, which has made its own mark in India's sporting calendar that aims to inspire children through the inspirational power of sports, brought together students from various schools across India, including children from regions such as North-East, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh.

IFFI brings magic of movies to visually challenged with audio description

In a first-of-its-kind initiative, International Film Festival of India (IFFI), has tied up with Saksham, a non-governmental organisation, to bring the magic of movies to the visually challenged.

The idea is to make movies accessible to all, and, in the process, reach out to wider audiences. Initiated in collaboration with UNESCO, the move, aimed at empowering persons belonging to marginalised sections of society, will see the visually challenged enjoy films screened at IFFI like common audiences.

SZ blind cricket today

Cricket Association for the Blind in India (CABI) along with Samarthanam Trust for the Disabled is organising a South Zone event which will be inaugurated on the November 3 at Rural Development Trust grounds at Anantapur. Six teams - Andhra Pradesh, Tamilnadu, Karnataka, Kerala, Pondicherry and Telangana, will take part in the tournament.

IIT-Kharagpur tech push to help visually impaired kids read Bangla classics

KOLKATA: Children with blindness will soon be able to savour classics of Bengali literature, thanks to a combined effort of three top institutes of higher education: IIT-Kharagpur, Jadavpur University (JU) and Indian Statistical Institute (ISI). The computer science and technology department of IIT-Kgp has devised a software that is helping render some of these evergreen texts into braille, the first time this is being done with an Indian language.

e-toilets come up at Braille Bhawan

The district administration has come up with electronic toilets at Braille Bhawan to help the visually impaired and physically challenged people.

These toilets are equipped with sensors that flush water automatically and the visually-impaired won’t have to grope for any button or knob for using these toilets now.
