To commemorate the World Braille Day, the students of Nethra Vidyalaya Junior & Degree colleges for Visually challenged students will be organising a walkathon on 04/01/2017. The students will be participating in the walkathon along with the lecturers, college staff, friends and well wishers.

Kerala Federation of the Blind turns 50, Minister to launch financial assistance scheme for self-employment projects

As the Kerala Federation of the Blind (KFB) enters its 50th year, its members acknowledge that the plight of the visually impaired population in the State has improved immensely over the last few decades, although there is still a long way towards becoming a visually impaired-friendly society.

In 1967, when the federation was founded, the visually impaired were a neglected and stigmatised section of society, says Habeeb C., vice president, KFB.

School for visually impaired to start functioning in March in Srinagar

Srinagar, Jan 2 (UNI) A co-educational residential school for visually impaired children will start functional in the summer capital, Srinagar, from March 2017.
An official spokesperson here today said that Divisional Commissioner Kashmir Baseer Ahmad Khan today convened a meeting to review the progress with regard to the establishment of the school at Parimpora in the city.
During the meeting, the Div Com said the Government had selected rented accommodation comprising 35 rooms at Parimpora for a school for visually impaired children.

New notes baffle visually impaired

A young Tabrez Alam has been living with a dented confidence ever since the demonetisation announcement. Visually impaired since birth, Alam could tell the difference between a real and fake ₹500 note by merely running his fingers across one.
The introduction of the new notes has left him worried. “The new ₹500 note appears to be of the same size as a ₹20 note. I can no longer tell the difference merely on the basis of the size of the note,” Tabrez says.

Technology to the rescue

Priya, a 32 year old housewife and mother of three, began losing her eyesight a few years ago. She was diagnosed with low vision which over time only became worse. She got in touch with our helpdesk seeking information on how she could cope with this loss of sight. Our counsellors provided her with information on the available technologies and resources that would enable her to adapt to her eye condition. She was told about screen reader and other apps that would ensure that she could continue using her laptop and mobile phone.

Reclaiming Life

Vijay, aged 22, lost his eyesight soon after he completed 11th standard. This prevented him from continuing his education and left him feeling depressed and helpless. The fact that he belonged to a lower economic background just made matters worse. After having spent almost 3 years at home he finally heard our radio advertisement and contacted our helpdesk, desperate for a solution to his problems. He was made aware of the fact that life does not end with blindness and that there were many options he had to take his life forward.

Computer training for visually impaired

Fifty visually impaired college students were imparted hands-on computer training during a five-day residential programme that concluded here on Friday.

The residential programme was held at the National Institute of Technology here from December 26 to 30. The basic computer training was jointly organised by Jagajothi Readers Circle and NIT, Tiruchi.

The participating students, including 15 girls, were from Tiruchi, Pudukottai, Karur, Ariyalur, Thanjavur, Coimbatore and Virudhunagar districts.

Student in search of scribe

Durgappa  is a visually impaired student residing in Dharwad, Karnataka. He is in his final year studying B.A. He contacted our counsellor at Bangalore seeking assistance in organizing a scribe to help him write exams. We connected him to PenVolunteers, a Bengaluru based organization which arranges for scribes to write examinations. A night before the exam, PenVolunteers informed Durgappa that they would not be able to provide him with a scribe for his examination. This last minute cancellation left Durgappa anxious.
