Natasha Trivedi Mumbai, September 24 Nestled in a lane in crowded Dadar is the 116-year-old home of close to 170 visually impaired girls from all over the country. A school that was started originally as a relief shelter for boys and girls who had been blinded in the devastating famine in Solapur in the 1880s, the Kamla Mehta School For The Blind now continues to house, and provides education to visually impaired girls right from pre-primary to Class VII.
Harvinder Singh, a 71 year old resident of Chandigarh contacted the Eyeway Helpdesk in June, 2016. He is suffering from loss of vision as well as hearing.When he contacted us, he was trying to learn how to use the computer but was facing difficulties in the process.He wanted to learn how to use other, simpler devices such as mobile phones. He asked our counsellor about accessibility features-rich options available for him among smartphones. We advised him regarding this and also guided him to buy a suitable device.
Gauri (name changed), a resident of Shahdara, Delhi first got in touch with us in 2011. At that time, she was appearing for class 10th exams through National Institute of Open Learning’s (NIOS). She told us that she wanted to do a computer training programme. With the help of our step-by-step guidance, she finally completed a computer training programme from National Association for the Blind (NAB), R.K. Puram in 2015.
Narhari Thakkar of Dungarpur, Rajasthan was working with the Postal Department, when he started losing his eyesight. He was forced to opt for voluntary retirement by his management. After hearing about Eyeway, he called us to know about various treatment options for Retinitis Pigmentosa. It was only on his second call, when he was enquiring about various employment options, that we got to know about his employment background. We recognised it as a clear case of discrimination against Narhari and blatant flouting of the PWD Act.
Pratyush Kaushal, an 18 year old student from Delhi started experiencing loss of vision when he was in class 11. He approached Score Foundation before the CBSE Class 12 examinations in 2016 for counselling and advice. His concern pertained to a rule according to which the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) does not allow a scribe from the same stream as the student taking the exam.

There were 12,44,402 differently-abled persons in Odisha as per the Census 2011, informed Social Security and Persons with Disabilities Minister Usha Devi in the State Assembly on Wednesday.
The Minister informed this in response to a question of BJP MLA Golak Bihari Nayak. The number include 2,63,799 vision-impaired, 68,517 dumb, 2,37,858 deaf, 2,59,899 physically-handicapped, 72,399 mentally ill and 1,72,881 of other category.
The State Government has introduced many schemes for their development and to bring them to the mainstream of the society, said the Minister.
Traffic outside the state secretariat, Mantralaya, remained blocked for almost half-an-hour Tuesday afternoon when a group of specially challenged protesters took to the streets protesting government apathy.

This was one of three hacks that 20 members of Random Hacks of Kindness (RoHK), a Bengaluru-based community, started working on Saturday. The team designing it hopes to help the visually impaired find bus stops, and identify buses that take them to their destination.
