Fashion Show for Visually Impaired: Their spirit confirms that nothing is impossible

THE NATIONAL Association for the Blind (NAB) in association with Amway Opportunity Foundation (AOF) celebrated the International White Cane Day on Friday. The celebrations included a fashion show and a talent hunt competition amongst visually impaired students from institutes across Chandigarh and Punjab. The intent was to encourage the academic as well as overall personality development of the visually impaired students and provide them with a platform where they could showcase their talent. Nishu Singal, UT director (social welfare department) was the chief guest.

A startup where blind staffers help travellers see the world

NEW DELHI: Around Diwali last year, corporate trainer Akash Bhardwaj was out shopping when he saw a nearly blind woman, with scars on her face, selling balloons. She had a small baby . Her husband had abandoned her after a neighbour disfigured her face with acid. She had also lost her job as a security guard.
"She asked me, 'Jis aurat ko muh dekh ke nikaal diya, usko kaun naukri dega (Who will employ a woman sacked because of a disfigured face)?'" says Bhardwaj, 31.

DAPD continues visual impairment advocacy

The Dominica Association of Persons with Disabilities (DAPD Inc.) is continuing its advocacy on visual impairment with a week of activities.

Visual Awareness Week and the 11th National Dollar Day was launched at the DAPD’s office in Goodwill on Monday 10 October 2016.

Visual Awareness Week is dedicated to informing and sensitizing the public about the challenges that the visually impaired face and how they can assist them in making their day to day life easier.

Media & Disability: How Media can be more inclusive towards persons with disabilities

Often we hear journalists raise a question on behalf of persons with disabilities, “Is the government doing enough for the country’s disabled population?” Reporters and anchors accuse the government representatives for not doing enough to make the environment ‘inclusive’?
How about we turn this question around and ask our friends in the media, “What role does the media play towards inclusion of persons with disabilities? Does the media practice what it preaches?”

Art exhibition for visually impaired

In a bid to make art accessible to the visually impaired, Delhi Art Gallery (DAG) Modern is hosting an exhibition with tactile replicas of works from the artist collective 'Group 1890'.

The initiative titled 'Abhas' has been executed by architecture and access consultant Siddhant Shah, who has reproduced the artworks in the form of embossed abstracts to allow blind people to touch and feel them.

"Through such initiatives we aim to overcome the physical and mental barriers for individuals and make art inclusive for all.

4 visually-impaired want to be Capitol scholars

CEBU, Philippines - At least four visually-impaired students from Cebu Normal University were among the first applicants in the Capitol's Paglaum Scholarship Program. 

Despite their physical limitations, there is no stopping for Jemar Togonon, Roland Christian Faelnar, Roland Christopher Faelnar and Shiela Marie Tiongzon from achieving their dreams of getting a college diploma.

Hundreds join Blind Walk to raise awareness on World Sight Day

ITANAGAR, Oct 13: There was a massive turn out for ‘Blind Walk’ on Thursday to raise awareness on issues faced by visually impaired. The Itanagar Blind Walk was organized by National Programe for Control of Blindness in collaboration with Indian Medical Association and Arunachal Pradesh Doctors’ Association with theme, ‘Stronger Together’ which was supported by various NGOs including the schools and the colleges to mark the World Sight Day.

Two separate human chains, where people stood with their arm on the shoulder of the person in front of them and blindfolds on their eyes, could be seen negotiating traffic and potholes in the capital Thursday morning. Students and volunteers experienced a few minutes of “life without vision” at the ‘Blind Walk’, which was held to raise awareness about the problems faced by persons with visual impairment.

Pursuing your dreams

One young man who connected with our helpdesk recently has a similar story of hope triumphing despair. Manish, a 22 year visually impaired student from Punjab had recently completed his B.Com.  He had an idea, a dream and a hope in his mind. He had always been interested in and had wanted to study law. However, he had a mental block regarding his capability to achieve this dream.

Self reliance through technology

A meaningful example of how accessible technology can change lives has emerged from our own helpdesk recently. Harish (name changed), a 44 year old man from Delhi had been dependent on others for a long time to manage his small business. He runs a momos shop in Delhi and uses his mobile phone to keep in touch with his ingredients suppliers, customers, family and friends. Being visually impaired, he could never tell who had called him whenever he missed a call. He would miss out on important updates, information and business opportunities.

Transforming Lives

Another story from our helpdesk which shows the power of social inclusion and integration in transforming lives for the better is the story of Priyanka (name changed), whose story we had shared with you in the previous issue of Scoreboard. At that time, Priyanka’s visual impairment caused her a lot of mental distress. She was anxious in social situations and rarely left the four walls of her home to go outside. Our counsellors were always there to listen to her concerns, provide her practical advice and emotional support.

Learning made accessible

Thomas (name changed), a 31 year old man from Dindikal, Tamil Nadu also reached out to our helpdesk in August. He has 100 percent blindness and is currently pursuing his M.A. in English Literature from an evening college. Thomas needed specific resources and books in order to prepare well for his M.A. exams. Resources for the M.A. level are difficult to obtain in an accessible format. We connected him to the National Association for the Blind (NAB), Delhi.  After engaging with them, he was able to get the books that he needed.

Making academics accessible

Sukumar (name changed), a student of class 11 from Tumkur, Karnataka with 100 percent blindness contacted the Eyeway helpdesk in August, 2016. He informed our counsellor that he was facing difficulties with his studies as he did not have books on the subjects of History, Economics, Political Science and Sociology in an accessible format. He needed them in order to successfully prepare for his class 11 mid-term examinations. We connected him to Sahana Charitable Trust, an NGO which has a repository of accessible resources for students.

Having met each other about 12 years ago and fallen in love, it took Prem Sagar (49) and Deepika (44) almost seven years to convince their families that despite their similar visual disability, they would be able to manage their lives well together.

 

While Prem Sagar is a lecturer of music at HMV College, his better half works with NGO Saksham that is into making talking books for visually impaired students.
